A cozy new look for a bungalow in Webster Groves

Photo stylist Becky McFarland Cox has transitioned her expertise in creating visually appealing environments for commercial shoots into interior design, undertaking a project to rejuvenate the first floor of a 1929 bungalow in Webster Groves. The homeowners, who had lived in the residence for over three decades and previously focused on developing a Colorado-inspired garden, sought McFarland Cox's help to refresh their interiors. McFarland Cox approached the design process by developing mood boards for each room and outlining a comprehensive action plan. The core objective was to introduce brightness into the space through nature-inspired colors and furnishings, while also incorporating subtle Southwest influences. Her design strategy involved integrating new furniture and textiles with existing family heirlooms, such as artwork, artifacts, and the couple's plant collection. McFarland Cox described the project as a "jewel" and a "love letter to family craft, preservation, and heritage," emphasizing the blend of old and new elements. In the living room, a space previously characterized by beige walls and heavy brown leather furniture, McFarland Cox collaborated with Lisa Lackey Designs and St. Louis Repair and Restoration. They applied a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore's "Chantilly Lace" paint to brighten the walls and trim. The room was furnished with a clean-lined sofa and a midcentury leather-and-wood chair from West Elm, complemented by Pendleton's Southwest-inspired wool throw pillows to add pattern and texture. A key feature of the living room design was a gallery wall, curated from the clients' treasured existing artwork, with varying scales to enhance visual interest, creating a relaxed and modern ambiance. The dining room was designed to integrate with the natural tones of the home’s original hardwood floors. McFarland Cox explained the need to balance the prevalent white palette with earth tones. Modern sideboard furniture was introduced, and nature-inspired artwork, including a three-dimensional flower wall sculpture acquired by the couple in Columbia, Missouri, along with various pottery pieces, completed the decor. A cozy sitting room at the back of the house drew inspiration from the views of the backyard, which features stone pathways, conifers, and laurels. McFarland Cox aimed to create a dark, enveloping atmosphere in this room to draw the eye towards the outdoor scenery, making the garden the central focus. She again partnered with Lisa Lackey to paint the room and ceiling in Benjamin Moore's "Cushing Green," using an eggshell finish for the walls and a contrasting high-gloss finish for the ceiling and trim. Carpenter Jim Langley constructed a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit with staggered shelves, designed to house diverse objects and collections, including the husband's fine whiskeys and vintage stereo components. An heirloom family portrait, discovered in the basement, was given a prominent display above a wood coat rack. McFarland Cox envisioned the family room as a personal retreat for the couple, fostering their interests in puzzles, music, and whiskey tastings. A pair of swivel chairs facilitated conversation and social interaction. Langley also designed a built-in bench seat that matched the shelving unit on the opposing wall, contributing to the room's cohesive design. The designer aimed for the room to provide a "warm hug" sensation. A second art montage in this room emphasized family heritage, featuring a picture of the husband's childhood mill in Colorado and heirloom elk antlers from his grandfather. A cowhide rug layered over a sisal rug further incorporated natural elements into the design. In the combined dining room and stairwell area, McFarland Cox extended the living room's aesthetic. A woven dome pendant chandelier and a wooden dining table added warmth, while Pendleton wools reappeared in the form of a patterned wool rug. The space was unified by black wood chairs with woven seating, a custom black iron stair rail by Perpetua Iron, and a black-and-white herringbone stair runner from Ambassador Flooring Midwest. To maximize space, bench seating with a faux fur throw was incorporated on the side of the dining table closest to the stairs. #InteriorDesign #BungalowRenovation #WebsterGroves #HomeDecor #NatureInspiredDesign #SouthwestStyle #FamilyHeirlooms #ColorPalette #SpacePlanning #InteriorDesign #BungalowRenovation #WebsterGroves #HomeDecor #NatureInspiredDesign #SouthwestStyle #FamilyHeirlooms #ColorPalette #SpacePlanning
