Beijing Xitan Hotel Landscape Design / Nikken Sekkei

The Beijing Xitan Hotel project, developed by Nikken Sekkei, is a resort that integrates traditional Chinese landscape design principles with contemporary aesthetics. The project draws inspiration from the landscaping philosophy of Tanzhe Temple, aiming to create a balanced environment that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. The design emphasizes an oriental aesthetic, focusing on both grand expansive views and delicate, intricate details. The total area of the hotel is 13,000 square meters, situated on a 21,000 square meter site in Men Tou Gou Qu, China, and was completed in 2022. The design process involved a comprehensive approach, encompassing concept design, schematic design, tender documentation supervision, and site supervision, all led by Nikken Sekkei Ltd. and Nomura Garden Laboratory. Beijing Shunjing Garden Co., Ltd. served as the construction contractor. The project's core concept revolves around the ancient Chinese belief of "Shijin Souou," which describes the four divine geographical features: the Blue Dragon (east), White Tiger (west), Vermilion Bird (south), and Black Tortoise (north). These mythological creatures symbolize different elements of the landscape—water, roads, forests, and hills—and their strategic placement is believed to bring fortune and protection. The hotel's layout integrates these principles, creating a protected and harmonious setting. The hotel's design specifically interprets the Tanzhe Temple's garden philosophy, which is known for its serene and naturalistic approach. This translation is evident in the hotel's landscape elements, which incorporate water features, sculpted terrain, and carefully selected flora to evoke a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. The overall aim is to provide guests with an immersive experience that reflects traditional Chinese culture while offering modern comforts. The use of natural materials, particularly stone, is prominent throughout the design, enhancing the aesthetic and tactile quality of the spaces. Key design features include the meticulous craftsmanship seen in elements like the custom-made stove and stone wall in the hotel lobby, created by Japanese stonemason Izumiya Sekizaiten. These details underscore the project's commitment to quality and cultural authenticity. The exterior spaces, such as the terraces and courtyards, are designed to offer diverse experiences, from expansive views to intimate garden settings. The landscape design carefully balances open areas with enclosed spaces, guiding visitors through a journey of discovery and relaxation. The integration of modern architectural forms with classical landscape elements creates a unique identity for the Beijing Xitan Hotel, presenting it as a contemporary interpretation of traditional oriental resort aesthetics. #HotelDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #ChineseDesign #OrientalAesthetics #NikkenSekkei #ResortArchitecture #TanzheTempleInfluence #SustainableDesign #HotelDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #ChineseDesign #OrientalAesthetics #NikkenSekkei #ResortArchitecture #TanzheTempleInfluence #SustainableDesign
