The Houzz 2026 Kitchen Design Trends Report: What Hot — And What’s Not
The Houzz 2026 U.S. Kitchen Design Trends Report offers comprehensive insights into the evolving preferences for kitchen renovations, drawing on data from over 3 million design professionals and 70 million homeowners. This report, detailed by Houzz staff economist Marine Sargsyan, highlights the most popular styles, materials, colors, and features influencing kitchen design in the current year. Understanding these trends can aid homeowners in making informed decisions, fostering creativity, and avoiding choices that may quickly become dated.
Transitional style continues to dominate as the most favored kitchen aesthetic, chosen by 25% of homeowners undertaking renovations, despite a slight decrease in overall style changes compared to the previous year. Traditional style ranks second at 12%, followed closely by modern at 11%, and contemporary and farmhouse styles both at 10%. Midcentury style accounts for 6% of preferences. This indicates a sustained interest in designs that blend elements of both classic and modern aesthetics, offering a balanced and enduring appeal.
Kitchen islands remain a highly sought-after feature, with 29% of renovating homeowners adding a new island and another 29% upgrading their existing ones. A significant 52% of upgraded islands exceed 7 feet in length, emphasizing a preference for expansive, functional central pieces. Rectangular shapes are overwhelmingly popular, chosen by 80% of renovators, far surpassing L-shaped, U-shaped, or square designs. The trend leans towards single, standard islands, with dual and multi-level options remaining niche. Appliances are frequently integrated into islands, with dishwashers (35%) and microwaves (32%) being the most common additions, followed by cooktops, beverage refrigerators, and wine refrigerators.
A notable shift has occurred in cabinet color preferences: wood has now overtaken white as the most popular choice, selected by 29% of renovators (a 6% increase from last year), while white decreased to 28%. Medium wood tones are particularly popular within the wood category, followed by light and dark wood. Off-white remains a strong contender at 15%, with green and gray also appearing in significant numbers. For kitchen walls and floors, neutral palettes continue to be preferred. Off-white is the leading wall color at 29%, with white following at 21%. Gray, blue, and beige also feature prominently. Wood flooring is the top choice for kitchens, selected by 49% of homeowners, followed by various shades of brown and gray.
Stainless steel appliances continue to reign supreme, chosen by 72% of homeowners. Other choices, such as white or black stainless steel and black, are considerably less popular. The most frequently installed large appliances during renovations include dishwashers, microwaves, ranges, refrigerators with freezers, range hoods, and cooktops.
Engineered quartz, despite a decrease in popularity over the past two years, remains the most chosen countertop material at 32%. Granite and quartzite follow, though granite also saw a decline. Butcher block or wood slab countertops experienced a significant increase in popularity when homeowners opted for different materials for their island and main countertops. Square or eased edges are equally favored for countertops. Veined patterns are the dominant choice for countertop designs, indicating a desire for natural and sophisticated aesthetics. Finally, built-in features are a key focus in renovations, with pantry cabinets (47%) and beverage stations (24%) being the most popular. Butler’s pantries, while less common, are increasingly being used for storage and prep space to reduce clutter in the main kitchen, often featuring storage for small appliances, prep counters, and a mix of enclosed cabinetry and open shelving.
