Room Envy: A kitchen in the Cotton Mill Lofts marries modern furnishings with historical bones

The Cotton Mill Lofts, constructed in 1881, offer residents a unique living experience characterized by authentic industrial elements. John Cugasi's condo exemplifies this by featuring 19-foot ceilings and 10-foot windows. The interior prominently showcases original brickwork that has endured various historical events, including the 2008 tornado and a significant fire in 1999, alongside decades of textile manufacturing operations. These preserved architectural features provide a distinct historical character to the living space. Cantoni design consultant Kohl Sudnikovich was tasked with renovating the kitchen to harmonize contemporary design with the loft's historic foundation. The design approach centered on integrating modern aesthetics while preserving the building's original industrial charm. A key design element in the kitchen renovation is the use of Spartacus granite for a waterfall-style island. This choice of richly patterned stone was made to cohesively blend the various metallic and finished surfaces present in the kitchen, serving as a central unifying feature. The cabinetry, sourced from Cantoni's Factory collection, incorporates materials salvaged from Italy. This collection features a mix of rustic wood for the lower cabinets and stacked black iron for the upper cabinets, contributing to the industrial-chic aesthetic. The original concrete flooring and aged-brick walls were intentionally left untouched during the renovation. These existing elements are integral to the loft's appeal, contributing to its authentic and historical ambiance, and are considered major draws for residents of the Cabbagetown complex. Practical design choices also enhance the kitchen's functionality and aesthetic. A pot rack was installed to optimize cabinet space while simultaneously adding to the visual interest through its display of various metallic cookware. Window treatments were incorporated to manage light filtering, operable by remote control, offering both convenience and control over the significant natural light from the large windows. The design philosophy embraces aged imperfection as a metaphor for loft living. Weathered copper accents, for instance, are expected to naturally mature over time, aligning with the overall theme of embracing the character developed through history. The article, originally published in January 2017, highlights how this kitchen successfully combines modern design with the unique historical integrity of the Cotton Mill Lofts. #Cantoni #CondoDesign #CottonMillLofts #KitchenDesign #ModernFurnishings #HistoricalArchitecture #IndustrialChic #InteriorRenovation #Cantoni #CondoDesign #CottonMillLofts #KitchenDesign #ModernFurnishings #HistoricalArchitecture #IndustrialChic #InteriorRenovation
