These Heirloom-Quality Pieces From CB2 Are Designed With Longevity in Mind
The growing collective consciousness around sustainable living has driven consumers to consider the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions, extending to home furnishings. Recognizing this shift, design companies are increasingly integrating responsible design and smart craftsmanship into their business models to offer more eco-friendly and durable product options. Andrea Erman, Product Design Lead at CB2, highlights that for the brand, quality encompasses responsible design and a commitment to reducing environmental footprint. This involves thoughtful material sourcing and striving for environmental improvement, climate neutrality, and diversity in design.
CB2's sustainability initiatives include targets such as achieving 60 percent Certified Preferred Fibers (grown without chemicals or pesticides) in their textiles and 50 percent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)®-Certified furniture by 2025. Responsible design is rooted in the materials used, favoring sustainably managed wood and timeless natural materials like stone and marble, which can endure for many years with proper care. These choices enable furniture to become heirloom-quality pieces that age gracefully over time, aligning with a circular economy approach.
The article showcases several sustainably sourced pieces from CB2 that embody these principles. For example, the Perno High-Gloss Black Wood Desk with Drawers, designed by VUUE, is crafted from FSC®-certified red oak and engineered wood, demonstrating a blend of modern aesthetics with responsible material use. It can be paired with the Surf Sling Black Leather Dining Chair, featuring genuine black leather over a polished stainless steel frame. Another featured item is the Muir Camel Velvet Swivel Chair by Lawson-Fenning, which incorporates wood certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council®. Its design reflects 1950s and 1960s California interior aesthetics, providing both style and a commitment to sustainability.
The Milbrae Curved Rattan by Brett Beldock is presented as a sophisticated and sustainable option for transitional spaces, with an FSC®-certified poplar wood frame covered in grasscloth, designed to develop a warmer tone over time. This piece complements items like the Caro Black and White Table Lamp, which features a green marble base. For dining areas, the Geary Round White Wood Dining Table by James Patterson showcases a minimalist design with an FSC®-certified oak veneer, solid mahogany, and engineered hardwood construction. This table can be paired with the Taos Black Marble Bar Cart, made with Italian Arabescato marble veneer and FSC®-certified blackened ash wood, creating a striking contrast.
Outdoor furniture also falls under this sustainable philosophy, as emphasized by designer Ross Cassidy, who states that outdoor pieces should last a lifetime. His Pinet Teak Suite for CB2 features frames made from FSC®-certified natural unfinished teak, designed to develop a silvery patina. The accompanying textured ivory cushions are made with fade-resistant fabric, ensuring durability. Additionally, the article highlights the importance of using OEKO-TEX certified linens, quilts, and organic cotton pillow shams for bedrooms, ensuring textiles are free from harmful substances. Other items like the Mauro Ivory Sofa, Venus Black Arc Floor Lamp with a marble base, and the handcrafted Cusco Textured Black Terracotta Vase from Peru further exemplify CB2's commitment to offering stylish yet responsibly produced home furnishings.
