Lawson-Fenning’s Earthy New Collection Creates an Everyday Escape at Home
Lawson-Fenning, a design-maker duo based in Los Angeles, has collaborated with CB2 to launch an exclusive collection inspired by California's architectural and design history. Founders Glenn Lawson and Grant Fenning, who met in art school, developed their design sensibilities over decades of working in California. Their new collection aims to bring these unique aesthetics to a broader audience through CB2. The inspiration for the collection draws heavily from the California Craft Movement of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, which emphasized artisanal craftsmanship and utilitarian function. Lawson highlights the movement's ability to create pieces that bordered on art but were highly functional for everyday living. Additionally, the duo looked to iconic California modernists such as Rudolph Schindler and Richard Neutra, admiring their minimalist approach and the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor living spaces. This focus on honest forms and lack of excess is a guiding principle for Lawson and Fenning in their new collection.
The collection encompasses a wide range of indoor and outdoor furniture, including seating, tables, storage, lighting, and accessories. A core characteristic of the collection is its use of rich, warm textures and earthy hues, directly inspired by the California landscape. Lawson notes that they even studied topographic aerial photographs of the California coastline to inform their color palette, incorporating blues, greens, and browns. This natural color scheme serves as a unifying element throughout the collection. The designers also carefully selected wood species like pine and oak for their inherent simplicity, allowing the natural material to highlight intricate details such as joints and the shape of chair legs. Fenning emphasizes their excitement for details that showcase the material's capabilities and inherent beauty.
Notable pieces in the collection include the Bishop Credenza, which balances a strong form with gently rounded corners, and the Anacapa Saddle Leather Lounge Chair, designed to expose its construction, highlighting joinery and wood grain. The Refugio Daybed strips away excess, featuring a fluid metal frame wrapped in leather. The Half Moon Dining Chair combines FSC-certified walnut with channel-tufted cotton velvet and brass detailing. For lighting, the collection offers the Cove Tall Ceramic Table Lamp, honoring the California craft movement with its natural materials, and the Norte Walnut Wood and Brass Sputnik Chandelier, a modern take on a midcentury silhouette. Accessories like the Descanso Brown and White Vase and Descanso Bowl showcase raw clay textures and reactive glazes. The modular Terrain Ivory Sectional is highlighted for its generous proportions and adaptability, designed to create a comprehensive environment.
The outdoor offerings, such as the Seahaven Teak Outdoor Sofa and the Drakes Bay Solid Acacia Outdoor Accent Table, further exemplify the collection's aim to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, a hallmark of California living. The Falls Travertine Dining Table also utilizes travertine, a stone significant in California midcentury modernism. The designers aspired for the collection to be transportive, offering a sense of Californian escapism within one's own home. They aimed to create pieces that are soft, comfortable, and useful, yet also evoke a feeling of being in a different, more serene place. The collection achieves a balance between grounding and transportive, familiar and new, comfortable and indulgent, delivering an understated California aesthetic.
