12 Types of Lilacs That Fill a Garden with Fragrance and Flowers

Lilac shrubs, belonging to the genus Syringa, are celebrated for their glorious and fragrant spring blooms, heralding the arrival of summer. These easy-to-care-for plants are also long-lived, offering a diverse array of options for gardeners, with hundreds of varieties differing in size and color. This guide narrows down the selection to 12 distinct types, each noted for its eye-catching appearance and exceptional fragrance, perfect for scenting the spring air. Among the white varieties, 'Angel White' (Syringa vulgaris) stands out for its pure white, frothy flower clusters and powerful scent. This variety is unique because it performs well in warmer climates, blooming without the need for a typical winter chilling period, making it suitable for southern regions. Its quick growth habit makes it ideal for hedges, screens, or as a landscape accent. Another prominent white lilac is 'Beauty of Moscow' (Syringa vulgaris ‘Krasavitsa Moskvy’), which produces pink, pearl-like buds that open into strong-scented, double-white flowers. This large plant often grows to tree-like proportions, requiring occasional pruning to maintain its shape, with its fragrance intensifying as the flowers mature. For those seeking deep hues, 'Congo' (Syringa vulgaris) is an heirloom variety from the 1890s, featuring deep wine-red flowers that transition to purple in late spring. These 10-inch flower heads are highly fragrant and attract pollinators like bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, making them a valuable addition to a pollinator garden. 'Lavender Lady' (Syringa vulgaris) offers strikingly fragrant, delicate purple blooms in large clusters. This variety is known for its robust blooming across various climates, even without a significant winter chill, and its resilience to mild drought conditions, making it suitable for drought-tolerant gardens. Unique among the early bloomers is 'Maiden’s Blush' (Syringa x hyacinthiflora), a Canadian-developed, extra-hardy selection that produces large, round, candy-pink flower clusters reminiscent of hydrangeas. Its blooms are exceptionally fragrant with distinct cinnamon undertones and typically appear one to two weeks earlier than most common varieties. Pruning should be done only after flowering to preserve the current season's blooms. Classic bluish-purple options include 'President Grevy' (Syringa vulgaris), which boasts wonderfully scented, double light bluish-purple blooms. Its heart-shaped green leaves have a subtle bluish tint, adding visual interest even when the flowers are spent. Similar in color but with single flowers, 'President Lincoln' (Syringa vulgaris), introduced in 1916, is recognized for its blue flowers and fast growth, producing huge clusters of fragrant blooms. This variety has a historical association with presidential gardens. For an unconventional lilac color, 'Primrose' (Syringa vulgaris) offers pale creamy yellow and white flowers that deepen in shade as the plant ages. This award-winning shrub provides exceptionally fragrant blooms, perfect for flower arrangements. 'Sensation' (Syringa vulgaris) stands out with its bicolored blossoms, featuring purple blooms distinctly edged in white. While its fragrance is pleasant, its unique appearance is its main draw, complemented by lush, dark green, heart-shaped leaves even when not in bloom. Dwarf varieties are also available, such as 'Tinkerbelle' (Syringa x 'Bailbelle' PP12294), which is ideal for small gardens and container gardening. This dwarf lilac presents a charming combination of warm pink flowers and wine-red buds, offering a distinct spicy scent rather than the conventional sweetness. 'Virtual Violet' (Syringa ‘Bailbridget’) is an exciting hybrid known for its purple stems, violet-tinted new leaves, purple buds, and fragrant violet blooms. This deer-resistant showstopper is excellent for cut flowers, borders, or foundation plantings, and attracts songbirds and butterflies. Finally, 'Bloomerang' (Syringa ‘Penda’) is a reblooming lilac that flowers in spring and again from midsummer to fall, providing extended bloom and fragrance. Its smaller stature makes it a perfect choice for compact gardens. #LilacVarieties #FragrantFlowers #SpringBlooms #GardenDesign #DroughtTolerantPlants #PollinatorGarden #ShrubCare #RebloomingLilacs #DwarfLilacs #LilacVarieties #FragrantFlowers #SpringBlooms #GardenDesign #DroughtTolerantPlants #PollinatorGarden #ShrubCare #RebloomingLilacs #DwarfLilacs
