Colin King’s New Vase Makes Supersize Floral Arrangements Foolproof
During quarantine, stylist Colin King engaged in a meditative practice of arranging and photographing daily still-life vignettes, leading to a significant discovery: the unique personality of a pear. This insight influenced his collaboration with Scandinavian design shop Menu, where he was tasked with creating a personal collection of objects. Among the eight pieces in the new assortment is a brass-cast pear paperweight, a permanent rendition of the perishable fruit, which holds deep sentimental value for King.
The article highlights several items from King's collection and offers styling tips. The brass pear paperweight, weighing 0.68 pounds, is versatile and can be perched on various surfaces like a shallow windowsill or the back of a stove, rather than solely as a paperweight. This demonstrates its dual functionality as both a practical item and a decorative accent.
Another key product is the Stance vase, available in 16-inch and 20-inch versions. This extra-long, weighted tube is designed to address the common challenge of displaying single stems and large, swooping branches without the risk of toppling over. King, who often forages for varieties like mountain laurel, allium, teasel, fennel, or datura, previously struggled to weigh down vessels for such arrangements. The Stance vase provides a stable solution for showcasing these larger floral elements, making supersize floral arrangements more accessible and secure.
King also emphasizes the importance of accessible book placement in reading nooks. In his living room, a low chaise is paired with an even shorter table, topped with books. His Converge bookends, made of lava stone, are designed to keep books upright and easily retrievable. When not in use, the two individual parts of the bookends interlock to form an X shape, serving as a sculptural element that adds visual interest to the space. This design marries functionality with aesthetic appeal, contributing to a well-curated reading area.
Lastly, the Rond bowl, another piece in the collection, is designed with such strength in spirit and form that King often prefers to leave it empty. While it can hold fruits—real or artificial—its inherent beauty and design allow it to stand alone as a decorative object. This illustrates King's philosophy that sometimes, curating a beautiful space involves simplicity and appreciating the intrinsic design of an item without the need for additional embellishment. The collection reflects a balance between utility and artistic expression, offering sophisticated solutions for home decor.
