ronan and erwan bouroullec celebrate henri matisse with ceramic fenêtre vases
The 150th anniversary of Henri Matisse’s birth is being honored with a special collection of limited edition ceramic vases, a collaboration initiated by Maison Matisse, a venture founded by Matisse’s great-grandchildren to perpetuate his artistic legacy. This collection features nine ceramic pieces, each drawing inspiration from the artist's iconic paintings and crafted by three distinguished designers: Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Jaime Hayón, and Alessandro Mendini. The collection is set to debut in Paris during FIAC, a prominent international art fair.
A significant contribution to this collection comes from Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, whose 'Fenêtre Vases' comprise three limited series. These vases are a contemporary interpretation of a recurring motif in Matisse’s oeuvre: the window open to the outside world. The designers, granted creative autonomy, meticulously maintained the delicate balance of forms and colors characteristic of Matisse's original artworks. Their objective was to evoke the essence of a natural landscape viewed through a window, a theme Matisse explored extensively in his paintings.
The 'Fenêtre Vases' are crafted from a combination of terracotta, anodized aluminum, and glazed ceramics, each material contributing to the overall narrative of an interior scene opening to a vibrant external world. The anodized aluminum plaque, distinguished by its turquoise hue, is strategically incorporated to reflect light, symbolically representing the sky. A terracotta brick forms the window sill, adding a tactile and earthy element to the composition. The enamelled ceramic vases are designed to hold flowers, completing the tableau and inviting nature into the artistic arrangement. This thoughtful integration of diverse materials aims to create a dynamic and harmonious ensemble, echoing the vibrant quality found in Matisse's art.
The Bouroullecs articulated their vision for the pieces, stating that this combination of forms and materials produces a 'vibrant whole,' where 'an interior scene opens to a landscape of dazzling light.' This statement underscores their intention to capture the interplay between interior space and the outside world, a central theme in Matisse’s work. The resulting vases are designed to be sensitive to the color and shape balance found in Matisse's original art.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the 'Fenêtre Vases' embody the joy of the creative process and highlight the collaborative synergy between design innovation and traditional craftsmanship. The project underscores the intellectual input of the designers and the skillful execution of the artisans. This interaction between conceptual design and expert production enriches the final products, giving them a depth that transcends mere functional objects to become celebratory pieces of art and design. The collection not only pays homage to Henri Matisse's enduring influence but also showcases contemporary design's capacity to reinterpret historical artistic themes through innovative material use and form.
