This Coat Rack Vanishes Into Your Wall When You Don't Need It
The VELTO wall-mounted foldable coat rack, designed by Brent De Meulenaere, challenges conventional coat rack design by embracing the concept of disappearing when not in use. Traditional coat racks, despite their aesthetic appeal, often get obscured by the garments they hold, rendering their design invisible. VELTO, conversely, is explicitly designed to remain unseen until its functionality is required, aligning with a philosophy that emphasizes discreet utility over constant visibility.
When closed, the VELTO coat rack presents as a flat panel, flush with the wall. This minimalist form factor allows it to seamlessly integrate into any interior space, especially when painted to match the wall color, effectively rendering it invisible. This design is particularly advantageous for compact living areas, narrow hallways, or entryways where protruding objects can create clutter or obstruction. The absence of a visible coat rack contributes to a clean and uncluttered aesthetic when not in active use.
Activation of the VELTO is achieved through a simple push, which engages a spring-assisted mechanism. This mechanism allows the flat panel to smoothly unfold, transforming into a functional hook capable of holding coats, bags, or scarves. The transformation process is inspired by the principles of origami, where a flat surface is ingeniously converted into a three-dimensional, functional form through precise folding. This interactive element adds a deliberate and engaging gesture to the daily routine of hanging or retrieving outerwear.
The VELTO is crafted from a single, laser-cut piece of polypropylene, a material chosen for its flexibility and durability, allowing it to withstand repeated folding and unfolding without degradation. This material choice also supports efficient production processes and minimizes waste, aligning with sustainable design practices. The ability to customize the color of the VELTO panel further enhances its adaptability, enabling users to either blend it seamlessly into their decor or allow it to serve as a subtle, intentional accent.
The design evolution of VELTO prioritized functionality and mechanism over superficial styling. Initial conceptualization focused on movement and hinge mechanics, followed by extensive prototyping using paper models to test folding angles, opening force, and overall stability. Only after refining the core operational mechanism were the aesthetic proportions and edges finalized. This iterative design approach ensures that the primary memorable aspect of the VELTO is its calm, intuitive transformation and practical utility, rather than merely a decorative feature.
Ultimately, VELTO positions its 'absence' as a key feature, moving away from products that vie for constant attention. Instead, it aims to coexist harmoniously with its environment and user routines, emerging only at the moment of need. This approach represents a refreshing perspective in product design, where quiet efficiency and unobtrusive functionality are valued, particularly for an item whose primary purpose is often to be covered.
