This Clever Idea Quadruples the Storage Possibilities in a Tiny Coat Closet
Many families find their front entry coat closets becoming chaotic dumping grounds for various household items rather than serving their intended purpose. Often, these closets are too shallow to effectively store coats, leading to an inefficient use of space. Common attempts to organize such spaces, like over-the-door shoe racks or coat hooks for bags, frequently result in more visual clutter and accessibility issues.
Melissa George from Polished Habitat transformed her own cluttered coat closet into a beautifully organized cleaning and utility closet. Her approach began with a systematic organizational hack: making detailed lists. First, she meticulously reviewed every item stored in the closet, determining which items were better suited for other areas of the home and which should remain. Following this, she identified items stored elsewhere that would be more practical to keep in the closet.
This two-step listing process enabled her to conceptualize the most efficient layout and identify the specific storage solutions needed. Recognizing that other areas of her home already accommodated coats and jackets, Melissa prioritized converting her tiny coat closet into a dedicated space for cleaning equipment and home maintenance supplies.
To implement her vision, Melissa installed shelves. The installation process was relatively quick, taking only a rainy Saturday, and she used 1x2s as braces with 16-inch-wide lumber for the shelves, painting them with leftover paint. She notes that pre-made shelves or a kit could also be used for simplicity.
For organizing the items within the newly shelved closet, Melissa grouped similar items together in baskets. She found patterned nesting baskets on Amazon for an affordable price. Other recommended retailers for cost-effective storage solutions include Target's Bullseye Playground and Walmart's Better Homes & Gardens line. Additionally, she suggested using inexpensive photo boxes for further organization.
To address the challenge of storing long items like brooms and mops, Melissa utilized Command broom and mop hangers, adhering them to the wall. This simple addition proved to be one of her most valued discoveries from the project, preventing items from falling out when the closet door was opened. This comprehensive approach to decluttering and organizing transformed a previously chaotic and underutilized space into a functional and efficient utility closet.
