Our Favorite Coat Racks
This article details a comprehensive review of coat racks, focusing on both wall-mounted and freestanding options, to help consumers declutter their entryways and enhance home organization. The selection process involved extensive research, initially scanning hundreds of models to narrow down a list of 37 for further investigation. The criteria for selection included aesthetic appeal, functionality, ease of assembly, sturdiness, and practical hook spacing and layout. Ultimately, 15 models, comprising two garment-rack styles, three coat trees, nine wall-mounted racks, and one mirror rack with storage, underwent rigorous testing.
For freestanding racks, stability was assessed by hanging a jacket and a heavy tote bag and attempting to topple them. Wall-mounted racks were installed on a plywood board to evaluate ease of mounting and stability, then tested for functionality with coats, bags, and umbrellas. Racks that proved difficult to assemble, were oddly sized, non-functional, or broke during testing were immediately disqualified. The article highlights several top picks across various categories, each with its unique advantages and a few minor drawbacks.
The Schoolhouse Mollie Hook is praised as a space-savvy option, offering significant storage within a compact, 7-by-6½-inch frame and a shallow 4-inch depth, making it ideal for narrow spaces. Its modern design features smooth, bouncy-ball-sized wooden knobs that prevent items from sliding. However, its finish can be delicate, and it's not ideal for six bulky coats simultaneously due to close hook spacing.
The Room & Board Crew Multiple Wall Hook is recommended for bulky items, boasting a 38-inch width and widely spaced hooks that accommodate winter coats and large bags. Its lacquered steel frame ensures sturdiness and durability, and it's available in numerous colors. The main drawback is the somewhat sharp metal edges, which might not be gentle on delicate fabrics.
For an attractive budget-friendly choice, The Container Store Maple Shaker Peg Rack is a solid wood option under $20. Made of unfinished maple, it's customizable with paint or stain and comes in four- or six-hook versions. Its perpendicular pegs, however, limit the number of items it can hold compared to angled hooks.
The Eames Hang-It-All is presented as a design classic, introduced in 1953 and re-released in 1994. Despite its higher price, its finishes, including painted or hardwood knobs and a powder-coated steel frame, are superior. Its 14 well-spaced hooks and deep bends accommodate numerous bulky items efficiently. The primary disadvantage is its cost, being double or triple that of other tested racks.
An inexpensive replica of the Eames, the Modway Gumball Mid-Century Wall-Mounted Coat Rack, offers a similar style and functionality at a much lower price point. While its size and layout mimic the Eames, its finishes, such as shiny knobs and mismatched screws, convey a cheaper aesthetic. However, its steel frame is equally sturdy and functional.
Rejuvenation's Brendon Farrell Hook Rack is a sleek, sculptural option made from solid white oak or walnut. It’s easy to install with hidden mounting hardware, creating a polished look. While visually striking, it holds fewer coats due to a single row of hooks and one test unit had a loose fin, though easily fixable.
Among freestanding racks, the Umbra Flapper Standing Coat Rack stands out for its exceptional stability, thanks to a large, heavy base. Its solid wood trunk and aluminum hooks are durable, with hooks that can be folded flush or flapped open. The main downside is its 16½-inch-diameter base, which occupies more floor space. Lastly, the Yamazaki Plain Coat Hanger is a compact coat tree, ideal for small entryways with its 11-inch diameter base. While its hooks are less customizable than the Umbra's, they are evenly spaced. However, its lighter base makes it less stable under heavy loads, and assembly, while relatively easy, may require consulting instructions.
