Design Trends: Retro Revival

The field of interior design is currently experiencing a "retro revival," with elements from various past decades reappearing in modern homes. This trend is characterized by a contemporary interpretation of older styles, making them suitable for present-day aesthetics. Major retailers like CB2 and West Elm are increasingly stocking pieces that reflect this nostalgic influence. Bridget Chirigos, a local interior designer, highlights several key trends that homeowners can integrate to infuse a retro flair into their living spaces. One prominent aspect of this revival is the shift towards bolder color palettes. While neutral tones of white, beige, and gray have long dominated interior design for their versatility, there is a growing inclination towards vibrant hues such as deep greens, rich wines, and sunny citrines. Chirigos encourages clients to choose colors they genuinely love, suggesting that even bold choices for larger items like sofas can work well. For those hesitant to commit fully, she recommends introducing color through smaller accents like artwork, painted side tables, throws, or bolster pillows. Patterns and prints, particularly geometric designs, are also making a strong comeback. Although geometric patterns have been a staple since the mid-century, contemporary iterations found in accessories like pillows and rugs are now exhibiting a "Hollywood glam" or Art Deco influence. These patterns, including stripes and large-scale herringbone, serve to add architectural interest to spaces that might otherwise lack distinctive features. Another significant trend involves the softening of interior lines. The rigid, straight lines often seen in modern furniture are being supplanted by curved and organic shapes. These softer forms contribute to a sense of grace and rhythm within a room, adding an elegant touch. Chairs and sofas with curved backs, along with round or drum-like coffee tables, are popular choices for introducing these gentle contours and creating a more inviting atmosphere. Texture is also playing a crucial role in current design trends. Materials like faux furs, fiber art, macramé, and velvets are being incorporated to add depth and warmth. Wallpaper, despite a past trend of removal, is seeing a resurgence, offering an excellent way to introduce texture. Modern removable wallpapers are available for those wary of long-term commitment, and they are typically used in smaller areas, as accent walls, or even on ceilings rather than throughout an entire room. Finally, the art of mixing modern and vintage pieces is central to the retro revival. Chirigos advises homeowners that existing older items can be revitalized by pairing them with contemporary elements. For instance, a vintage burl wood chest can appear new when adorned with an updated lamp. A general guideline is to skip a generation when mixing styles to avoid a dated look, effectively spacing out the eras of the combined pieces to create a cohesive yet eclectic design. #DesignTrends #RetroRevival #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #BoldColors #GeometricPatterns #CurvedLines #Textures #Wallpaper #VintageModernMix #DesignTrends #RetroRevival #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #BoldColors #GeometricPatterns #CurvedLines #Textures #Wallpaper #VintageModernMix
