Home design ideas: An Art Deco bathroom inspired by railroads
This article details a bathroom redesign project inspired by an Art Deco mosaic tile floor from Seattle's Union Station. The homeowner, whose grandfather was a railroad conductor, found the image on Pinterest, which resonated deeply with her personal history. Cecilia Casagrande, the designer, embraced this inspiration and commissioned Heritage Tile in Wisconsin to meticulously re-create the intricate mosaic pattern, featuring squares and hexagons, for the Brookline homeowner’s third-floor bath. This personalized and historically significant element became the focal point around which the entire bathroom scheme was developed.
Several key design choices were made to complement the Art Deco theme and the re-created floor. A wall-hung black vanity by Strasser Woodenworks was selected to prevent obscuring the elaborate mosaic flooring, maintaining its visual prominence. To further enhance the vintage aesthetic, the designer sourced octagonal Bakelite knobs from an online vintage dealer, adding an authentic touch reminiscent of the Art Deco era. The countertop and a custom ogee-shaped backsplash were crafted from a remnant of green marble, discovered at Olympia Marble & Granite in Needham. The choice of green marble introduces a natural element that harmonizes with the historical period and adds a layer of sophistication to the space.
Plumbing fixtures in unlacquered brass were intentionally chosen for their ability to develop a natural patina over time. This aging process contributes to the historically-themed ambiance of the bathroom, ensuring that the new elements blend seamlessly with the vintage inspiration rather than appearing overtly new. The shower design also prioritizes the mosaic floor's continuity, featuring a curb-less entry that allows the tile pattern to flow uninterrupted throughout the space. The shower walls are adorned with dark green porcelain tiles from Discover Tile, which possess a wavy texture and were specifically chosen to echo the original inspiration image from Seattle’s Union Station, reinforcing the cohesive design narrative.
Beyond the primary design elements, personal touches further enrich the bathroom’s narrative. A black and white photograph of a train, taken by the homeowner’s grandfather (who worked as either a conductor or lineman), was incorporated into the decor, providing a direct link to the personal history that sparked the renovation. Lighting fixtures, such as Rejuvenation sconces, were selected for their resemblance to period lamppost lights, further immersing the space in the Art Deco aesthetic. The curves of the Pottery Barn black metal mirror subtly nod to Art Deco sensibilities, while a Cole & Son wallpaper by Piero Fornasetti, featuring keys hidden in greenery, covers the back wall, adding an element of sophisticated whimsy and artistic detail. This comprehensive approach ensures that every detail, from major fixtures to subtle accents, contributes to a unified and deeply personal Art Deco-inspired bathroom.
