11 Retro Kitchens We Love From AD PRO Directory Designers
This article explores a collection of 11 retro kitchen designs, curated from the AD PRO Directory of interior designers, showcasing a resurgence in soulful, vintage-inspired aesthetics. These designs move beyond the minimalist all-white kitchen trend, embracing vivid colors, eclectic components, and unique historical nods while maintaining modern functionality. Each featured kitchen highlights a distinct approach to integrating retro elements, from subtle touches to bold statements.
Prospect Refuge Studio in Minneapolis, for instance, drew inspiration from Gucci's spring-summer 2020 runway to create a kitchen featuring deep red and vibrant green cabinets, complemented by a glass backsplash in Benjamin Moore's Cucumber Salad. The design incorporates a red laminate island top, reminiscent of Alvar Aalto's Artek tables, and is situated beneath RBW pendants.
Another Human, led by Leah Ring, renovated a Pasadena kitchen, meticulously honoring the midcentury architects Buff, Straub & Hensman. Ring preserved the original design's spirit by staining new cabinets to match the old, incorporating square backsplash tiles, dark stone countertops, and checkerboard floor tiles. A banquette upholstered in Knoll fabric and vinyl, alongside Ravenhill Studio and Servomuto pendants, accentuates the royal blue Heath tile backsplash, inspired by Alvar Aalto’s kitchen.
Ayromloo Design’s Mexico City kitchen, located in a pied-à-terre, evokes 1960s mod with practical and durable materials such as stainless steel, cork, and Un Rayito de Sol concrete tiles. Designer Jessica Ayromloo’s favorite element is a customized shelf featuring antique dragon sconces as brackets, adding an unexpected and original touch. Furnishings were sourced from local markets and 20th-century design destinations.
Zoe Feldman Design infused a Washington, DC, row house kitchen with a playful 1990s and 2000s pop culture aesthetic. The kitchen features a neon yellow Ilve range and hood, contrasted by black and white Clé tiles reminiscent of Vans, soft peach-hued cabinetry, In Common With pendants, and a Waterworks faucet. The combination results in a bold, artistic, and retro feel.
Digs Design Company created an airy Shingle-style Cape Cod kitchen that blends Palm Beach and Cape Cod aesthetics. Jocelyn Chiappone incorporated quartz countertops, Urban Electric Company pendants, and cheerful Grow House Grow cement tiles. The island, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Athabasca, is anchored by custom Jenny Lind–turned legs, paying homage to old Cape Cod.
Ken Fulk Inc. designed a New England cottage kitchen for large family gatherings, aiming for a timeworn and unpretentious feel. The space is clad in custom casework with inset beadboard paneling painted in Farrow & Ball’s minty Arsenic, complemented by historical, geometric-print Adelphi wallpaper. Industrial pendants from the Brimfield Flea Market, Serena & Lily bar stools, and a hand-painted checkerboard floor create a distinct throwback atmosphere.
SCW Interiors crafted an Austin kitchen with a grounded, old-world aesthetic. The Spanish Colonial space features custom Tabarka Studio tiles, leathered granite Ubatuba countertops, brass-hammered CopperSmith sinks, and vintage rugs. Private-label ash cabinets with Modern Matter hardware and a brazen grassy green glass-door True Residential refrigerator add unique character.
Sagrada Studio reconfigured a Culver City kitchen, opening it to the dining room and courtyard. Designer Hema Persad incorporated the clients' original Indian dining table and light fixtures, durable quartz countertops, a cement apron-front sink, a butcher-block island, and distinctive sage cabinets paired with an emerald Zia Tile zellige backsplash, creating an exciting monochromatic green scheme.
Deana Lenz Interiors designed an Upper East Side kitchen with emerald green tiles and clover-shaped motifs, complementing the client’s original green American Range stove. A custom brass-tacked hood, modern table, and clean-lined cabinetry blend seamlessly with prewar architecture. The design also features a coffee bar with glass and black wrought-iron cabinetry.
Annie Downing Interiors created a sophisticated yet playful new-build kitchen in Austin, featuring a lilac-tinted banquette inspired by roadside diners. Fusing Moore & Giles leather and graphic Ottoline fabric, the cozy seating vignette is enhanced by an Allied Maker pendant and Natural Curiosities artwork.
Lisa & Leroy brightened a Washington, DC, row house kitchen, notorious for its lack of natural light, by using custom mint green cabinetry, warm brass accents, and bold botanical wallpaper. The design maximizes the small footprint by concealing a workstation and microwave behind cabinets, maintaining the retro vibe while incorporating modern conveniences. These projects collectively demonstrate how designers are skillfully blending nostalgia with contemporary needs, proving that retro kitchens can be both stylish and functional.
