DIY-er saved £100s upgrading an IKEA bed with this clever headboard hack
A product photographer and YouTuber from Melbourne, Nicole Herrick, successfully transformed her affordable IKEA Tarva bed frame into a luxurious, unique design, saving hundreds of pounds in the process. Initially purchasing the bed frame for £165, Nicole sought to elevate its appearance without a significant financial outlay, drawing inspiration from high-end bed designs she admired online but couldn't find on the market. Her motivation stemmed from the idea that rather than buying a new bed, an existing one could be revamped with a new headboard.
To achieve this transformation, Nicole visited a local hardware store, Bunnings (similar to B&Q;), where she acquired spray adhesive for £13 and MDF panels for £40. She then sourced upholstery fabric and wadding from a fabric supplier, spending £50. A key consideration during fabric selection was durability, as she needed a material that her cats wouldn't easily damage, leading her to choose micro suede. Additionally, she managed to obtain a foam mattress for free through Facebook Marketplace, further reducing her project costs. The total expenditure for the headboard hack amounted to £103.
Nicole's bedroom initially lacked the stylish aesthetic she desired. The 'before' state was functional but uninspired. The 'after' transformation, however, resulted in a freshly decorated bedroom featuring a monochrome palette with neutral tones and black accents. The revamped bed, with its new headboard, became the focal point, exuding an expensive and classy ambiance that belied its actual cost. Luxury headboards often retail for upwards of £500, making Nicole's £103 creation a remarkable cost-saving achievement.
The DIY process involved several meticulous steps. First, Nicole cut the MDF panels using a circular saw for the backing board and rounded the top corners with a jigsaw. She then applied spray adhesive to both the backing board and a foam mattress piece, adhering them together and allowing them to set overnight. The following day, she trimmed the edges with a blade and shaped the foam to create rounded edges. Two layers of wadding were added to each piece before wrapping them in the chosen upholstery fabric. A staple gun was used to secure the wadding and fabric to the back of the backing board.
Further steps included modifying the IKEA bed frame. Nicole sawed off the original bedhead and constructed a new leg support for the backing board, which she then secured to the bed frame. She also connected the two front bedhead panels and drilled holes in their back. Fishing line was threaded through these holes, piercing all the way through the back bedhead panel, and then secured with staples. To complete the look, a bed skirt, fashioned from some of the upholstery fabric, was stapled on, discreetly concealing storage underneath the bed.
The finished bedroom also incorporated long curtains, a comfortable armchair, and a cozy Berber-style rug, adding to the overall sophisticated feel. Nicole expressed immense satisfaction with her IKEA hack, noting that the bed now appears significantly more luxurious. The unique design of the headboard creates the illusion of large backing pillows, offering increased comfort for leaning against. This project showcases an effective method for achieving a high-end look on a budget through creative DIY solutions.
