On a wing and a chair: Japanese design in Adelaide
Kiyoshi Sadogawa, a highly regarded designer from the Hokkaido-based furniture company Conde House, recently visited Aptos Cruz Galleries in Stirling, Adelaide, to install some of the company's popular furniture pieces. Among these pieces is Sadogawa's Wing Chair, which he considers his most significant work. The visit marks Aptos Cruz becoming Adelaide's exclusive distributor for Conde House furniture, making it one of only two locations in Australia where these designs are available.
Sadogawa's design philosophy emphasizes creating furniture with enduring appeal, transcending fleeting trends. He believes that a good chair balances beauty and function while acknowledging design history and establishing its own unique identity. The Wing Chair, released in 2008, embodies a quiet elegance, characterized by its upward-sloping arms, reminiscent of Brancusi's 'Bird in Space,' and the continuous soft curves of its seat and backrest, offering exceptional comfort.
Steve Ronayne, owner of Aptos Cruz, notes the continuous nature of design, where new creations contribute to an ongoing conversation, even in categories as saturated as chairs. Ronayne's connection to Japanese culture, through his wife and son, has long inspired him to feature contemporary Japanese furniture. Historically, post-World War II Japanese furniture focused on utility, lacking the cultural and historical reflection seen in earlier periods. However, a resurgence of design appreciation in the 1970s and 1980s, fueled by economic growth, has revitalized Japanese design, with Conde House at its forefront.
Conde House, celebrating its 50th anniversary, is recognized for its commitment to craftsmanship and good design, attracting renowned contemporary designers like Sadogawa. Another designer from Conde House, Jin Kuramoto, attributes the widespread appeal of Japanese design to its inherent simplicity and functionality, especially in an increasingly complex world. Kuramoto, who prefers minimal and undecorated designs, believes that design should be dictated by the natural properties of materials, with the designer's role being to add a unique, innovative element.
Tetsuya Fujita, president of Conde House, highlights the company's dedication to providing designers with access to premium materials, often sourced from Hokkaido forests, and utilizing Japanese textiles whenever possible. This approach supports the creation of furniture that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and sustainable. Ronayne admires this philosophy, describing Conde House's products as embodying a restrained essence that grows more appealing over time, representing furniture designed to last for generations. The partnership between Aptos Cruz and Conde House introduces Adelaide to a furniture brand that exemplifies timeless Japanese design principles of quality, simplicity, and sustainability.
