How To Remove Pollen Stains From Outdoor Furniture
Pollen season, which can start as early as late February and extend through early June in some regions, particularly the South, often leaves a noticeable yellow residue on outdoor surfaces, including furniture. Contrary to common belief that this yellow pollen comes from flowering trees, it primarily originates from conifer trees. This accumulation of pollen not only exacerbates allergies but also stains outdoor furniture. Fortunately, methods exist to effectively remove these stains and prevent their occurrence.
Before initiating any cleaning process, it is crucial to consult the furniture manufacturer's care label to ensure that the chosen cleaning method does not invalidate any warranty. The necessary cleaning tools will vary based on the furniture's condition and the cleaning technique employed. Common tools include a vacuum cleaner with upholstery attachments, a garden hose, a microfiber cloth, a bucket, water, Sal Suds or dish detergent, a washing machine, and potentially a portable carpet/upholstery cleaning machine like the Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet Cleaner.
For non-upholstered outdoor furniture, or sections of furniture that do not have upholstery, pollen can typically be removed by rinsing with a garden hose or wiping with a damp microfiber cloth. Should any residue persist, a cleaning solution can be prepared by mixing one gallon of warm water with 1/4 cup of Sal Suds or a preferred dish detergent. The furniture can then be washed with a microfiber cloth dipped in this soapy water, followed by a thorough rinse with clean water.
For upholstered furniture, the initial step involves using the upholstery attachments of a vacuum cleaner to extract and remove pollen. This is often sufficient for minor pollen accumulation. If a deeper clean is required and the furniture features removable, washable cushion covers, these covers can be taken off, spot-treated for any stains with a laundry stain remover, and then machine washed on a cool temperature setting. Some fabrics may be suitable for tumble drying.
In cases where upholstered furniture lacks removable cushion covers, two methods are recommended for deep cleaning. The first, and often quicker, approach involves utilizing a portable upholstery/carpet cleaning machine, such as the Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet Cleaner, which can efficiently deep clean fabrics. If such a machine is unavailable, an alternative method is to prepare a solution of one gallon of warm water and 1/4 cup of Sal Suds or dish detergent in a bucket. All upholstered and non-upholstered parts of the furniture can then be washed with this soapy water using a microfiber cloth, followed by a clean water rinse from a garden hose.
Preventing pollen accumulation on outdoor furniture can significantly reduce cleaning efforts. Similar to protecting outdoor grills with covers, patio furniture can also be shielded from outdoor elements, including pollen, using furniture covers. Many online retailers offer patio furniture covers in various sizes. Keeping these covers on when the patio furniture is not in use can save considerable time and maintenance, especially during peak pollen season.
