Casa Dani: Spanish villa-inspired fine-dining restaurant with undulating ceiling in Manhattan
Michelin-starred chef Dani Garcia has launched Casa Dani in Manhattan West, a fine-dining establishment that draws inspiration from his Spanish heritage and culinary journey. Situated within Citizens, a 17-story office complex, Casa Dani is one of two fine-dining options available, reflecting Garcia's ambition to create a more personalized dining experience rooted in his Mediterranean background. The Rockwell Group, a New York-based architecture and design studio, was responsible for the interior design of Citizens and Casa Dani.
Upon entering Casa Dani, guests are presented with a display of terracotta and glazed pots alongside the chef’s Spanish olive oils, guiding them into a space designed to evoke the ambiance of a Spanish villa. This transitional area features a compressed ceiling that opens into an undulating ceiling in the main dining room, complemented by warm walnut parquet flooring. Adjacent to the entrance, a 9-meter-long open kitchen, enclosed by glass and brushed stainless steel, offers a view of the culinary process, emphasizing the theatrical aspect of cooking.
The restaurant's design addresses a challenging site layout, which involved a significant change in ceiling height. The undulating ceiling, along with rustic terracotta tile flooring and strategic placement of plants, aims to create an illusion of dining on an outdoor terrace. The main dining room, accessible via a staircase with leather-wrapped rails from the bar and lounge area, features custom lace drapery screens that delineate various seating arrangements, including intimate two-person tables, booths, and larger family-style round tables. The color palette incorporates Mediterranean tones, utilizing light wood, warm clay plaster, tiles, and marble, with Mori pendant lights from RBW providing a lantern-like illumination.
The design elements extend to the open fireplace, adorned with handmade emerald green tiles that mimic the ceiling's curves. The aromas and sights from the kitchen permeate the entire space, reaching the adjacent L-shaped bar and lounge. The bar area is characterized by a green sculpted marble counter, green fluted ceramic tiles, and custom ivory leather stools with bronze bases. A mirror-backed bar enhances the visual connection to the kitchen's activities. A woven rope art piece, located near the bar, pays homage to the fishing villages of Andalusia, Garcia's birthplace. Throughout the lounge, custom solid marble tables, banquettes, and counter-height seating provide diverse options, while potted olive trees serve as a nod to the region's agricultural traditions.
