5 minutes with interior designer Tali Roth
Tali Roth, a Melbourne-born interior designer, has carved out a unique niche in New York's design scene, bringing a fresh, personal touch to interiors, particularly within the city's prevalent rental market. After moving to New York in 2013 with her husband and limited funds, Roth initially faced challenges in securing a traditional design role. Leveraging her background in psychology and fashion, she found an opportunity with a start-up agency that facilitated freelance designers, allowing her to utilize social media to build her own brand. This ultimately led to the establishment of her independent design business and the launch of 'The Playhouse,' her innovative 'shoppable office.'
Roth's design philosophy is significantly shaped by New York's renting culture, which contrasts with Australia's emphasis on home ownership. She believes that living in a rental for decades necessitates making it comfortable and personalized, demonstrating that extensive decoration and even reversible renovations are achievable. For instance, she transformed her own Chelsea loft by applying a faux concrete finish to the walls and adding wainscoting in a previous apartment, all with the understanding that these changes could be reversed without issue. Her approach challenges the conventional limitations of decorating rental properties, emphasizing comfort and personalization over strict adherence to original conditions.
Over six years in Manhattan, Roth has refined her signature aesthetic, describing it as 'pretty but not overly feminine, clean-lined but with a warm, mid-century edge.' Her design rule dictates that every interior should incorporate a mix of vintage, custom, and affordable or retro-fitted pieces, creating a harmonious and layered look. For artwork, she often draws inspiration from Australia, featuring pieces from artists like Minnie Pwerle, Adam Pyett, Stephen Baker, and Leila Jeffreys, and introducing clients to Australian brands such as Dinosaur Designs and Contemporary Editions, as well as glass artist Amanda Dziedzic.
Currently, Roth is engaged in diverse projects, including the design of a flagship coffee venue for Bluestone Lane in SoHo, the offices for AWAY luggage, a multi-residential development in Brooklyn, and numerous private apartments, including one for a high-profile couple in the entertainment industry. Her material preferences lean towards glass, wood, and marble, favoring natural states and avoiding overly stained timber. While clients seek her distinct style, Roth prioritizes integrating their personalities into the space. She avoids being prescriptive, preferring to incorporate client-provided items, such as a grandmother's vase, even if they don't align with her personal taste, believing that these sentimental pieces bring joy and contribute to the overall balance and unique character of a home.
