This Petite Space Convinced Me I Need a Blush Bathroom
The author recounts her experience searching for a new apartment with her boyfriend, ultimately finding a promising one-bedroom in Greenwich Village that required extensive renovations. While initially enthusiastic about reimagining various spaces like the kitchen and a cozy TV nook, the bathroom presented a design challenge. Despite a clear vision for other rooms, she struggled to conceptualize a suitable design for the apartment's bathroom.
Her design conundrum was resolved after visiting the Kips Bay Decorator Show House and encountering a petite blush bathroom designed by Studio DB. The aesthetic, inspired by a trip to Italy and its dramatic, colorful marble, aimed to blend traditional stone details with a fresh, forward-thinking approach. Studio DB principal Britt Zunino explained their goal was to create a "jewel box" effect. They partnered with Alison Rose for Artistic Tile and Stone, customizing a graphic tile pattern using four distinct marbles: Cippoliono, Lilac, Rosa Potagallo, and Noir Moon. Complementing this, Arabescato Rosa marble slab was selected for the walls, baseboard, and a custom-designed vanity, which echoed the arched details of Alison Rose's half-moon tile.
The bathroom's warmth was enhanced by rose gold fixtures from Kohler, balanced by contemporary black lighting from RBW and Colonel. A custom blush mural by Payton Turner of Flat Vernacular adorned the ceiling, completing the sophisticated yet inviting ambiance. The author was particularly struck by a quote from Kelly Wearstler: "Everyone looks good in a pink room," realizing the appeal of such a flattering environment for daily routines. Zunino further endorsed blush tones for small, poorly lit spaces, noting their ability to provide a soft, warm glow, making them ideal for creating identity and soothing atmospheres in bathrooms.
For those inspired to incorporate blush into their own bathrooms, the article offers several suggestions. A gradual approach involves starting with blush-toned accessories, such as vanity items and a rose-hued rug, as seen in Garance Doré’s bathroom. More committed renovations could include copper hardware or blush marble countertops. For a bolder statement, covering the entire space with floor-to-ceiling millennial pink ceramic tiles, as demonstrated by 2LG Studio, offers an inexpensive yet personalized option, softened by traditional chrome fixtures. Finally, embracing the terrazzo trend with sorbet plaster walls, a pink terrazzo backsplash, and a rose-cast concrete sink, paired with soft green accents, minimalist black fixtures, and plants, can create a modern, long-lasting look. The author concludes by affirming her newfound determination to incorporate a blush pink bathroom into her future home.
