Matching Your Backsplash to This Other Feature Instantly Ties the Kitchen Together
Abilene, Texas-based designer Rebecca Gibbs envisioned a kitchen with saturated, layered colors, leading to her latest kitchen remodel. The design, featured on Domino’s renovation and DIY feed, @reno_notebook, gained significant popularity, becoming the most-liked kitchen post to date. The core design element involves the extensive use of Fireclay’s star-and-cross tiles in Evergreen, an emerald hue, which covers the kitchen walls as a backsplash. Unconventionally, Gibbs extended this backsplash all the way to the ceiling, making it a prominent statement piece in the room.
AThe innovative aspect of Gibbs's design lies in her decision to closely match the kitchen cabinets to this bold backsplash. Instead of opting for a high-contrast look, which is common with statement backsplashes, she aimed for a low-contrast, tone-on-tone aesthetic to create a more grounded feel. Her husband, Lucas, custom-built all the cupboards, which Gibbs then painted in Sherwin-Williams's "Retreat," a gray-green shade that is subtly different from the Evergreen backsplash tiles. This deliberate choice of a monochromatic, yet varied, color palette for both the backsplash and cabinets is identified as the key factor that unifies the kitchen's design.
This design approach, where a saturated backsplash is paired with subdued, complementary cabinets, results in a visually cohesive and striking space. The article suggests that this concept can be adapted using any color, emphasizing that the combination of a bold backsplash and tone-matched cabinets creates an immediate "wow factor" and effectively integrates all elements of the room. The professional installation of the tiling underscores the importance of skilled craftsmanship in executing such a design. The overall aesthetic achieved by Gibbs demonstrates how thoughtful color coordination between major kitchen components can elevate the entire space.
