All the Biggest Design Trends in One Tiny U-Shaped Kitchen
This article highlights the transformation of a compact kitchen in Los Angeles's El Sereno neighborhood, spearheaded by designer Gabrielle Aker. The renovation focused on maximizing storage and integrating modern design trends, particularly vibrant colors and unique materials. Initially, the kitchen featured a galley layout and a standard window, which Aker reimagined to incorporate a U-shape, significantly increasing storage capacity, including a wine fridge. To compensate for the removal of one window, the remaining window above the sink was enlarged, enhancing natural light in the space.
A key design element is the Tetris-like backsplash, which showcases a sunset-inspired palette of Fireclay tiles. The client's preference for orange and the presence of a green and orange wall mural in the adjacent living room influenced this color scheme. The chosen hues—Mandarin, Sorbet, Tuolumne Meadows, and Milky Way—were selected for their vibrant yet earthy undertones, avoiding pastels that felt too 'Easter-y.' Aker deliberately created an imperfect, ombré arrangement for the tiles, moving away from symmetrical stripes to achieve a more intentional and dynamic visual effect.
The countertop installation presented a challenge when the initial terrazzo order was incorrectly sized. Aker swiftly pivoted to Concrete Collaborative in San Diego, sourcing a chunky yellow and black marble chip composite. This material was used not only for the main surface but also integrated into details like the Wolf cooktop and a waterfall edge. The waterfall edge was a strategic design choice to extend the visual appeal of the countertop and avoid a plain white cabinet side, especially since it's the first element seen upon entering the kitchen.
Hardware selections were also approached with an artistic sensibility. Eschewing standard bar pulls, Aker opted for oversize half-moon white-oak handles for the cupboards, custom-made by her husband’s company, Aker Studio. These curvy handles introduce softness, balancing the room's straight lines and complementing the white cabinetry. Appliance integration was another critical aspect, particularly for the client's preferred double-door refrigerator. Aker ensured the appliance seamlessly blended into the cabinetry to prevent a 'mass of appliances' aesthetic. Similarly, a minimal white vent hood was chosen to merge with the background, allowing the colorful tile backsplash to be the focal point. The design effectively combines functionality with a vibrant, trend-conscious aesthetic, turning a small kitchen into a lively and energetic space.
