Say Goodbye To High-Shine Finishes—this Is The Better Choice For Bathrooms & Kitchens

In the realm of home design, particularly for bathrooms and kitchens, various elements contribute to the overall aesthetic, including flooring, backsplash tile trends, countertop materials, and cabinet colors. Among these, hardware finishes play a crucial, albeit often underestimated, role in defining the space's character. After a period dominated by high-shine finishes such as polished brass and chrome, a significant shift in design trends is emerging. The year 2026 is poised to see a preference for metals with patina finishes, marking a move away from pristine, glossy surfaces towards options that offer a more organic and timeless appeal. This evolving trend is reflective of a broader desire for spaces that exude warmth and a lived-in feel, rather than a strictly polished and impeccably put-together appearance. Interior design expert Lorri Hicks Cazenave highlights this transition, noting that the emphasis is now on 'pieces with patina, proportion, and presence,' advocating for finishes that embrace intentional imperfection. This involves the integration of mixed-metal patinas, with soft black, pewter, and aged brass becoming prominent in lighting, hardware, and furniture. The palette is shifting towards mellow, non-shiny finishes, contributing to a layered rather than loud ambiance within rooms. Patina finishes are not confined to a single design style; they possess a versatility that allows them to seamlessly integrate into various aesthetics, from farmhouse and rustic cottage to modern, minimalist, industrial, bohemian, and eclectic interiors. Homeowners looking to adopt this trend have a wide array of choices, as patina coatings can be applied to metals like brass, copper, bronze, zinc, and pewter. Furthermore, these finishes come in a spectrum of colors, including rust, black, brown, and the distinct blue-green verdigris, offering flexibility to complement existing decor. For those leaning towards a minimalist or industrial design, black patina finishes are an excellent choice for hardware. Brown patinated brass or copper options are particularly suited for farmhouse, vintage-leaning, or organic modern aesthetics, adding a touch of natural elegance. Rust patina finishes enhance the raw and rugged appeal of industrial interiors. The trend also embraces mixed metals, especially in kitchens, as seen in projects by designers like HGTV's Christina Hall. To incorporate mixed-metal patinas without creating an overwhelming effect, designers suggest starting with two finishes: one dominant and one accent. For example, a brown-patinated copper could serve as the dominant metal, complemented by an accent of black-patinated iron or steel. This approach allows for depth and interest in the design while maintaining a cohesive and sophisticated look, moving away from the once-popular high-shine hardware to a more character-rich and enduring aesthetic. #HardwareFinishes #PatinaMetals #KitchenDesignTrends #BathroomDesignTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #OrganicModern #MixedMetals #TimelessDesign #HardwareFinishes #PatinaMetals #KitchenDesignTrends #BathroomDesignTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #OrganicModern #MixedMetals #TimelessDesign
