Mix, match and mosaic: The top interior design trends of 2018

The year 2018 is marked by a strong emphasis on texture, style, and unexpected combinations in interior design, according to Sara Babinski, a designer for Armstrong Flooring. Key trends include the celebration of natural imperfections in hardwood floors, variations in plank sizes and colors, and the incorporation of wood on walls and faux stone backsplashes. The overarching theme is to mix, match, and create a mosaic of different materials and aesthetics. Nature-inspired elements are prominent, with earth tones dominating accent pieces, linens, walls, and flooring. This includes natural-colored solid hardwood and rattan furniture, alongside breezy seaside styles featuring aquatic blue and green shades. There is a growing appreciation for distressed and weathered looks, as well as a continued demand for reclaimed wood aesthetics. Additionally, faux stone, a trend from the 90s, is making a comeback, with designers interpreting natural stone in various decor applications. Advancements in flooring technology offer innovative options that mimic natural materials. Luxury vinyl or LVT flooring, for example, can replicate the look of hardwood due to sophisticated printing technology. Armstrong Flooring's products, such as their vinyl or engineered tile with Diamond 10 Technology, incorporate cultured diamonds for enhanced scratch, stain, and scuff resistance. For those preferring solid hardwood, Paragon Solid Hardwood also utilizes Diamond 10 Technology, ensuring durability and maintaining the beauty of 100 percent solid Appalachian hardwood. Stimulating the senses through a mosaic of colors and textures is another significant trend. Hardwood flooring highlights natural knots and imperfections, with variations in plank sizes, colors, and widths. Artisan styles, featuring hand-brushed and hand-scraped patterns, are gaining popularity. The "raw meets polished" trend combines high shine with ultra-low gloss, seen in reclaimed wood furniture with modern metal hardware or the use of both low and medium gloss finishes on floors. Mixed metals are also prevalent, particularly in kitchens, where warm-toned fixtures, copper, rose gold, and oxidized metals coexist with stainless steel and black-finished appliances. Cultural influences and animal prints continue to be design drivers. Warm minimalism, characterized by warmer shades of gray, blue, and brown, aligns with the Hygge aesthetic. Conversely, bold maximalism combines strong colors and patterns with gray walls and blonde hardwood or wood-look floors. Accent pieces with global flair, such as hand-woven baskets or Moroccan-designed lamps, add a sense of worldly style. While exotic hardwood is less favored, American domestic species are popular, often paired with animal print furniture and accessories like area rugs, which complement natural material floors. Victorian and antique decor are experiencing a resurgence, influencing flooring choices such as Millwork Square Solid Hardwood parquet and strip hardwood in Prime Harvest. Design conventions are being challenged, especially in flooring, with trends like herringbone patterns. Floors are incorporating different colors, textures, glosses, and varying plank widths and lengths. Furthermore, the trend of using flooring materials on walls, such as wood, continues. Despite these varied approaches, hardwood floors are predominantly seen with low-gloss and ultra-matte finishes. #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecoration #HardwoodFlooring #NaturalElements #MixedMaterials #FlooringTechnology #CulturalInfluences #VictorianDecor #TexturalDesign #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecoration #HardwoodFlooring #NaturalElements #MixedMaterials #FlooringTechnology #CulturalInfluences #VictorianDecor #TexturalDesign
