Homeowner upcycles free wooden pallet into a bespoke radiator cover – genius!
A homeowner successfully transformed a plain wooden pallet into a bespoke radiator cover, significantly enhancing her hallway's aesthetic while saving money. Laine Manley from Blaenau Gwent, Wales, undertook this DIY project after completing a shabby chic makeover of her hallway. Despite being pleased with the stenciled floor and overall new look, she felt the existing radiator detracted from the room's appeal.
Initially, Laine searched online for suitable radiator covers but encountered difficulties finding one that matched the specific dimensions of her radiator, which measured 96 inches tall, whereas most available options were a standard 82 inches. This prompted her to explore DIY alternatives, drawing inspiration from budget DIY groups on social media and instructional videos on YouTube. A friend provided a wooden pallet free of charge, enabling Laine to commence her project.
Her process involved carefully dismantling one side of the pallet to create a basic box frame. Once the frame achieved the desired fit around the radiator, she reassembled the outward-facing side by nailing the slats back into place, ensuring adequate spacing between them to allow for heat dissipation. Following construction, the wooden frame was sanded smooth and painted white to complement her shabby chic hallway decor. To add a finishing touch and further enhance the shabby chic aesthetic, Laine oiled the top ledge of the cover.
To securely attach the newly crafted radiator cover to the wall, Laine purchased a pair of wall brackets from a local DIY store for £5.99. These brackets allowed her to fix the cover firmly in place, effectively concealing the previously unattractive radiator. This resourceful upcycling endeavor not only addressed a practical need but also completed the desired look for her transformed hallway, turning a formerly 'boring' space into an inviting area.
Laine expressed satisfaction with her first attempt at such a DIY project, highlighting the success of creating a custom, budget-friendly solution that perfectly integrated with her home decor. This project exemplifies how readily available materials, coupled with creativity and practical skills, can lead to impressive and cost-effective home improvements.
