We're Losing Our Minds Over the "Toaster Garage" in This Minimal Chicago Kitchen
This article highlights the design and functionality of a Chicago kitchen overlooking Lake Michigan, conceptualized by renowned kitchen designer Mick De Giulio. Having previously worked with the homeowners, De Giulio understood their lifestyle and entertainment needs, allowing him to embark on the project with a clear vision. The renovation involved structural changes, including knocking down walls to achieve a more open floor plan and lowering the ceiling to incorporate coves for concealing air ducts, which collectively enhanced the sense of light and spaciousness.
The kitchen features wide-plank walnut flooring with a Norwegian finish, creating a light and natural feel that contrasts with the tranquil Magnolia-white gloss cabinets from SieMatic. De Giulio paid meticulous attention to details, such as faceted cabinet doors with ultrathin pulls and serrated trim around the fridges, which add texture and prevent the space from feeling too modern or flat. The design prioritizes a horizontal layout, connecting the interior views to the expansive lake and sky, fostering a sense of serenity. A notable feature is the floating quartzite countertop, further contributing to the ethereal aesthetic.
Beyond aesthetics, the kitchen is engineered for high functionality. De Giulio pioneered the concept of "lips" along the sink edge, a design he created for Kallista, which allows cooking accessories like colanders and cutting boards to be conveniently hung. This innovation, now widely adopted, exemplifies the thoughtful integration of practicality into the design.
The article also showcases several clever storage solutions and organization tips. These include a dedicated cabinet for glassware and accessories adjacent to the Sub-Zero wine unit and main fridge, and a "toaster garage" — a sliding Taj Mahal quartzite door that conceals a pull-out toaster tray.
Additional organization products are recommended, such as a terracotta tile utensil crock, an expandable cookware organizer, chrome roll-out cabinet drawers, and a magnetic stainless steel paper towel rack. For slim drawers, a Joseph Joseph narrow utensil tray is suggested. Other ideas include a desktop bookshelf for cookbooks, a hanging file holder for magazines and coupons, refrigerator organizer bins, and divided freezer bins for efficient food storage. A Joseph Joseph Totem Waste Separation Bin combines trash and recycling in one unit, saving floor space. A recipe tin helps keep family recipes safe and organized, while expandable shelf organizers maximize vertical cabinet space. A HYRIXDIRECT broom organizer keeps cleaning tools tidy, and a Keurig K-Cup Pods Carousel provides neat storage for coffee pods. Over-cabinet storage organizers, airtight food storage container sets, magnetic grocery list notepads, acrylic napkin holders, and adjustable kitchen wrap organizers further enhance kitchen order. Corner shelves optimize unused spaces, and an over-the-door pantry rack adds extra storage. For entertaining, a buffet caddy simplifies carrying plates and utensils. Ceiling pot racks offer a decorative and space-saving solution for cookware, and turntables (Lazy Susans) are recommended for easy access to pantry items. A simplehuman wall mount grocery bag dispenser helps keep plastic bags tidy, and banana hooks free up counter space. Innovative solutions like the Yamazaki magnetic kitchen organization rack and various over-sink drying racks are also highlighted for maximizing utility and maintaining a clutter-free environment.
