At the 2020 Serenbe Designer Showhouse: Black is the New Black
The 2020 Serenbe Designer Showhouse, presented by *Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles*, showcases innovative design ideas within a modest 2,427-square-foot home featuring three bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. Unlike larger showhouses, this residence emphasizes ample living space, including a covered deck designed by Whitney Durham. The overall design ethos suggests a worldly and well-traveled imaginary family, whose tastes are reflected in collected art and globally-inspired elements like hand-painted silkscreens from Asia in the laundry room and foyer, and an African zebra hide rug in the dining room. The layout prioritizes both communal and private spaces, encouraging family togetherness and individual relaxation.
The covered deck by Whitney Durham Interiors serves as a vibrant contrast to the rest of the home, which predominantly features earth and mineral tones. This outdoor area is characterized by bold colors, clean-lined furniture, animal prints, and upcycled vintage pieces, such as a coral bar cart. Schumacher's Exotic Butterfly fabric in 'spring' for the floor-to-ceiling linen panels adds a whimsical, mid-century touch, hinting at the imagined residents' collecting habits. Moving indoors, a sense of serenity is maintained through muted finishes and specific furniture choices. Matte black hardware, chosen by Lorraine Enwright of Intuitive Dwellings, anchors each room, providing a contemporary feel that complements the Cirrus Gray quartzite fireplace surround and the Fantasy Brown marble waterfall island in the kitchen, both from MSI Surfaces.
Throughout the house, designers incorporated textural elements to create a lived-in and casual atmosphere. These include natural fiber rugs, velvet drapery with tassel tape trims, and slubby upholstery. The primary bedroom, designed by Patrick and Meghan Sharp of Mister + Mrs. Sharp, features an abaca rug by Patterson Flynn Martin with a bold, circular design, leading to a spacious bathroom with quatrefoil marble tile, black cabinetry, and Black Oak marble in the shower.
The two smaller bedrooms also offer distinct design approaches. Ashley Malone of Bennett Malone Interior Design created a luxurious and relaxing escape in bedroom three, utilizing olive green walls, unique art, and a bamboo-style black light fixture positioned to create a cozy, cocoon-like effect within the towering ceilings. Bedroom two, designed by Stephanie Andrews of Balance Design, connects to the third via a Jack-and-Jill bathroom and features an expansive ceiling adorned with Anewall Tawny Mural wallpaper from Lulu and Georgia. This room, with its patterned rug, hanging twin bed, and pastel colors, embodies a bohemian aesthetic suitable for a teenager.
The mudroom and laundry room, designed by Maggie Griffin, also functions as a home office, reflecting contemporary needs. A small antique Chinoiserie desk (in black) and a ghost chair fit discreetly, while the washer and dryer are hidden behind custom cabinetry. This space exemplifies pragmatic beauty and functionality, mirroring the home's overall design philosophy. The showhouse is located at 11325 Serenbe Lane, Chattahoochee Hills, GA 30268, and was open through October 4, 2020, with admission at $25, benefiting the Art Farm. Social distancing and masks were mandatory, with extra cleaning measures in place.
