Home cinema install: Synthesis of sound
This article details the installation of a high-end home cinema system, centered around a JBL Synthesis speaker setup, in a dedicated movie room. The client, familiar with JBL Synthesis from a previous system, requested a comprehensive 7.2.6 array, including fifteen enclosures and two 18-inch subwoofers. Dawsons AV was commissioned to design and integrate the system, ensuring optimal sound performance and discreet speaker placement within the challenging space.
The room presented several initial obstacles, such as a marble tile floor and two entrances, one of which was a patio door. To address the acoustical challenges posed by the hard floor, a 'room within a room' concept was implemented. This involved constructing a timber frame covered with fabric panels, which not only enhanced the room's aesthetic but also significantly improved its acoustic properties. Beyond this structural modification, a thorough equalization and calibration process was performed to fine-tune the audio output.
An innovative feature of the installation is the integration of motorized, sliding wall sections. These discreetly conceal the entrances, including the patio door, and can be effortlessly controlled through a Crestron system, accessible via a tablet touchscreen interface. This allows for a seamless transition between the room's open and cinematic configurations.
The audio processing, equalization, and power delivery for the system are all managed by JBL Synthesis components. This includes seven S820 power amplifiers, each providing 2 x 200W, along with an S7165 seven-channel amplifier delivering 7 x 160W. The audio signal is processed by a JBL SDP-75 HD processor, complemented by two SDEC 4500 digital EQ modules to ensure precise sound reproduction.
Visuals are projected onto a massive 4.2-meter-wide, 2.35:1 aspect ratio screen, which fills the entire front wall of the room. A calibrated Wolf Cinema TXF5000 4K laser projector, paired with a ProScaler, is responsible for delivering crisp and vibrant 4K images. The screen also features lateral masking for adaptable viewing experiences.
The entertainment sources are diverse, providing the owner with a wide range of options. These include a Kaleidescape Strato 4K movie player for 4K downloads, a Panasonic DMP-UB900 for Ultra HD Blu-ray playback, an Apple TV 4K, and a Sky Q PVR for broadcast content. Additionally, the system accommodates legacy hardware, notably a LaserDisc player.
Lighting in the room is also highly sophisticated, with 42 RGB LED strips integrated into the false ceiling. This allows for extensive customization of lighting patterns and colors, enabling the creation of various ambient moods. The installer notes that when activated, these lights sequentially illuminate towards the screen, adding to the cinematic experience. The Crestron control system on the tablet provides unified management over sources, lighting, temperature, and the motorized doors, simplifying the user interaction with the complex setup.
