Eight bathrooms with chunky sculptural stone sinks
This lookbook showcases eight examples of bathrooms featuring monumental stone sinks, drawing inspiration from various residential and commercial interiors across the globe, from Mexico to Poland. These designs emphasize the aesthetic and functional appeal of stone basins, whether crafted from smooth marble, rugged travertine, or other unpolished natural stones. Such sinks are frequently incorporated into luxury settings like hotels and restaurants due to their opulent feel, but they are equally effective in creating dramatic focal points within private residences.
The featured designs illustrate a range of approaches to integrating stone sinks into bathroom spaces. One example is the Vallirana 47 apartments in Spain, where Vora studio designed a sleek marble sink with double washbasins, harmonizing new and old elements within the renovated Barcelona flats. Another notable project is the Untitled House in the UK by Szczepaniak Astridge, an extension to a London home that highlights textures. Here, a concrete-walled void leads to a bathroom featuring a solid, veiny marble sink, complementing the home's concrete and timber aesthetic.
In Spain, Ábaton studio transformed a crumbling stone stable into the Off Grid Home, powered by renewable energy. The bathroom in this rustic home features a long, two-tiered stone sink, reflecting the natural and sustainable design ethos. Meanwhile, in Brasília, Brazil, BLOCO Arquitetos renovated a 1960s apartment, creating a bathroom sink from matte-finished Branco São Paulo granite, which also serves as the flooring. This design, resting on a plywood cabinet, pays homage to Brasília's architectural style of the 1960s and 70s.
The Loma Residence in Mexico, designed by Esrawe Studio, features a Tikal marble sink that functions as both a practical fixture and a sculptural art piece. EWE Studio, aiming to promote Mexican craft heritage, created this dark-hued basin to match the moody, green quartzite-lined bathroom, providing a sober and contemporary atmosphere. In Palma, Mallorca, OHLAB designed an apartment block where the bathrooms contrast wooden expanses with rough-hewn stone sinks, accented by brass taps that introduce a metallic gleam.
Fala Atelier's Small House with a Monumental Shower in Portugal incorporates a unique "shower tower" clad in pale green tiles. Adjacent to this, a smooth, sculptural marble sink adds a touch of luxury to the space. Finally, the Botaniczna Apartment in Poland, by Agnieszka Owsiany Studio, features a calming blend of marble and wood. The bathroom, like the kitchen, utilizes creamy travertine marble slabs, chosen for its timeless quality and how beautifully it ages, according to studio founder Agnieszka Owsiany.
These diverse projects demonstrate the versatility of stone sinks in creating distinctive and luxurious bathroom interiors, whether through polished contemporary designs, rustic integrations, or sculptural statements. The material choice of stone—be it marble, granite, or travertine—consistently elevates the aesthetic and tactile experience of the bathroom, contributing to both functionality and high-end design.
