Understated Moscow Apartment by Maria Mikena Interiors Evokes Purity of Thought
The Purity of Thought project, designed by Maria Mikena Interiors, transforms two adjacent units in Moscow into a single 1,240-square-foot apartment. The design philosophy was inspired by the owner's personality, focusing on clean lines and a soft, halftone color palette, drawing parallels with Russian constructivist architecture and Luke Turner’s ideas on metamodernism. This approach results in a tranquil and thoughtful living space that integrates vintage furniture with contemporary Russian art.
The living room serves as a central feature, adorned with custom-made watercolor wall panels by Russian artist Ekaterina Lobanova. These panels wrap around the space, introducing soft pastel tones that contribute to the apartment's serene atmosphere. The artistic elements are complemented by carefully selected furnishings and lighting, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
The dining area showcases a custom-made dining table illuminated by a Visual Comfort chandelier, creating an elegant focal point. Flanking the table are vintage dining chairs from the 1960s, which add a touch of historical charm and character to the contemporary setting. This blend of old and new is a recurring theme throughout the apartment.
In the open kitchen, clean lines and a soft color palette continue the apartment's minimalist aesthetic. The space features custom cabinetry designed by Maria Mikena herself, along with a marble countertop and backsplash that exude sophistication. A sculptural, cylindrical air vent adds a modern and functional artistic element to the kitchen design.
The children's bedrooms are designed with individual personalities in mind. The boy’s room combines a vintage chair with speckled Sanderson wallpaper, providing texture and visual interest. A digital art poster by Russian artist Varya Schuka introduces a modern and playful touch, reflecting the vibrant energy of youth. In the girl’s bedroom, custom arc panels create a sense of character and playfulness, complemented by walls dressed in wallpaper from the Swedish brand Eco Wallpaper.
The master bedroom incorporates an east-meets-west aesthetic with a Formakami pendant by Jaime Hayon for &Tradition; and a lounge chair by Kelly Wearstler, creating a sophisticated and comfortable retreat. The master bathroom features a striking onyx countertop and handcrafted sconces by Russian studio Wishnya Design, adding a luxurious and artistic touch to the private space. Throughout the apartment, custom cabinetry, patterned rugs from The Rug Company, and lighting by Jaime Hayon for &Tradition; contribute to a cohesive and refined design.
