Like the look of white oak? Consider these alternatives
Miralis, a Quebec-based manufacturer of kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, has introduced two new wood grain product lines designed to offer sustainable and durable alternatives to traditional white oak. The company's philosophy emphasizes creating timeless and long-lasting kitchens, aiming to reduce waste by providing products that consumers will not need to replace frequently. This approach is reflected in their latest offerings, which combine resource-efficient materials with elegant design.
The first new product is a 'neolaminate' material, a term coined by Miralis to describe a superior manufacturing process compared to traditional laminate. This synthetic product is engineered to replicate the appearance and texture of real white oak, with Miralis claiming it is "probably the most realistic fabricated wood product in the world." The neolaminate features a particle board core composed of 95% wood waste from pallets and construction materials, making it a more sustainable option. Its realistic look and feel are achieved through high-resolution scanning of real wood veneers, creating a deep and authentic texture. Additionally, the neolaminate offers color and tint uniformity, a consistent aesthetic that can be challenging to achieve with natural wood, which often exhibits variations in shades.
The second product line is a higher-end engineered wood veneer. This option provides the natural characteristics of white oak, including visible knots and grain, while incorporating enhanced durability. Unlike solid wood, this engineered wood is treated with a topcoat typically used for wood flooring, making it exceptionally resistant to the wear and tear common in kitchens and bathrooms. This treatment process also includes a special method that helps the product maintain its original color over time, even with continuous exposure to sunlight, addressing a common issue of discoloration in natural wood.
The development of these products followed extensive research, including trips to international design exhibitions like EuroCucina, and insights gathered from Miralis's network of designers. The growing popularity of white oak, coupled with concerns about the sustainability of increasing demand for natural wood, motivated Miralis to seek eco-friendly alternatives without compromising aesthetics or quality. The company aims to alleviate pressure on forests by offering these durable, sustainable options.
Miralis's commitment to innovation and sustainability extends to its manufacturing processes. In 2022, the company invested $45 million in two new manufacturing plants in Quebec, integrating cutting-edge automation and robotics to ensure efficient and environmentally friendly production. This investment positions Miralis as a leader in the North American market for kitchen cabinet production. The new product lines, which have already garnered positive feedback from designers, are expected to meet high customer demand and will be available through Miralis's network of 120 dealers across Ontario, Quebec, and the United States.
