pedro livni and karin bia build concrete libertad street house in uruguay

The 'Libertad Street House,' a two-storey dwelling in Montevideo, Uruguay, was designed by architects Pedro Livni and Karin Bia to prioritize privacy and flexible living. The primary living spaces are situated on the ground floor, shielded from the street by a predominantly opaque facade, ensuring seclusion for its inhabitants. These ground-level areas feature an open-plan layout, which can be reconfigured as needed using mobile walls, allowing for adaptable partitioning of the space according to the user's discretion and current needs. Towards the rear of the property, the lounge area seamlessly extends onto an outdoor terrace, which is equipped with a barbecue area, fostering an environment suitable for relaxation and social gatherings. A central design element is the staircase, strategically placed within a double-height hallway at the core of the home. This positioning serves multiple functional purposes: it effectively organizes the floor plan, facilitating clear distribution between different zones of the house, and crucially, it allows natural light to penetrate deeply into all areas of the residence, enhancing its brightness and spatial quality. The upper storey of the Libertad Street House accommodates the more private functions of the home. It houses three bedrooms, each designed to overlook the backyard, providing peaceful views and a sense of retreat. The master bedroom is uniquely positioned at the furthest edge of the plot, offering maximum privacy and an exclusive connection to an external veranda. This veranda is a notable feature, incorporating a rooftop hot tub, which introduces an element of luxury and offers an elevated outdoor living experience. Throughout the design, a carefully chosen, restrained material palette defines the aesthetic and structural integrity of the house. Reinforced concrete is extensively utilized for both the slabs and vertical surfaces, contributing to a robust and contemporary architectural language. This choice of concrete is complemented by the integration of warmer wooden tones, which are applied to the floors and various dividing elements, introducing a tactile contrast and a sense of warmth to the interiors. The combination of these materials creates a balanced and sophisticated atmosphere within the residence, blending modern architectural principles with inviting domestic comfort. The overall design emphasizes a thoughtful approach to space, light, and material application, resulting in a residence that is both functionally efficient and aesthetically refined. #UruguayanArchitecture #ConcreteHouse #ModernDesign #FlexibleLivingSpaces #OutdoorLiving #ResidentialArchitecture #PedroLivni #KarinBia #Montevideo #UruguayanArchitecture #ConcreteHouse #ModernDesign #FlexibleLivingSpaces #OutdoorLiving #ResidentialArchitecture #PedroLivni #KarinBia #Montevideo
