Ikea and Sonos picture frame speaker review: wall of sound
The latest collaboration between Ikea and Sonos, the Symfonisk picture frame with Wi-Fi speaker, is designed to integrate technology seamlessly into home decor. This product, priced at $200 and available from July 15th, follows their previous releases of a table lamp and bookshelf speaker in the Symfonisk series. While branded as a "picture frame," it functions more accurately as a "wall art speaker" as users cannot insert their own photos or posters. Its primary goal is to offer a less obtrusive wireless speaker solution that blends with interior design.
The speaker is designed for both wall mounting, with included hardware, and freestanding use, featuring silicone feet and felt pads for stability and surface protection. It can be oriented horizontally or vertically. Constructed mainly from plastic, the front panel features a polyester fabric with a default art design by Jennifer Idrizi, which draws inspiration from musical structures. Ikea plans to offer additional art prints for $20 each, allowing for customization, though custom designs from personal photos are not available. The company has stated it will release new designs regularly, potentially opening avenues for aftermarket prints.
One frequently discussed aspect is the visible power cord. The white, fabric-covered cord measures 11.5 feet, offering ample length and features built-in storage on the frame's back for excess cable, secured with a Velcro strap. Multiple cord routing paths are available to suit different power outlet placements. Additionally, two speakers can be daisy-chained for a cleaner aesthetic and to conserve outlets. An Ethernet port is also included for wired connections in areas with unreliable Wi-Fi.
In terms of audio performance, the Symfonisk picture frame speaker closely rivals the Sonos One, a benchmark for sound quality in the Sonos lineup. It provides sufficient bass without causing excessive vibrations and is generally capable of filling average-sized rooms. Sonos' Trueplay feature, accessible via the iOS app, allows for acoustic calibration based on a room's characteristics. The speaker lacks built-in microphones, consistent with prior Symfonisk products.
For home theater applications, two Symfonisk wall speakers can serve as surrounds for a Sonos Arc or Beam soundbar. The Sonos app facilitates easy setup for this configuration, allowing users to choose between a subtle or more substantial audio mix for music playback. While effective for surround sound, optimal placement might require experimentation, especially in non-traditional room layouts. The Sonos app also allows for adjusting surround speaker distance and volume independently. The speaker supports various music streaming services through the Sonos app, as well as AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, though Bluetooth and 3.5mm auxiliary input are absent. Users can group speakers for multi-room audio or synchronize playback across their entire Sonos system. The product is seen as a design-focused solution for those who prefer to minimize visible technology in their living spaces, provided their aesthetic preferences align with Ikea's art selections.
