This miniature self-watering herb-planter can be magnetically attached to your fridge!
The Pico, a miniature self-watering planter, offers a convenient solution for growing fresh herbs and produce indoors. Designed by Arun and Karanvir, the Pico is presented as "the farm that fits in your palm," emphasizing its compact and portable nature. It is smaller than an Amazon Echo and can be positioned on kitchen countertops, or mounted on various surfaces like a fridge, wall, or cupboard using magnetic, velcro, or wall-mount attachments. This design addresses the common perception that kitchen gardens are messy by providing a clean, self-contained system.
The Pico builds upon the concept of the earlier Herbstation, aiming to empower individuals to cultivate their own greens. A key motivation behind its development is the issue of nutritional loss in commercially harvested produce, with up to 50% of nutrients potentially being lost between harvest and consumption. Additionally, the origin of store-bought produce can be uncertain. The Pico enables users to grow their own greens in optimal conditions, free from chemicals and waste, promoting freshness and sustainability.
The device is designed for ease of use, featuring a sun-mimicking growth light and a self-watering reservoir. Users only need to charge the unit and replenish the water supply once a week, making plant care largely automated. The integrated multi-spectrum LED grow lights, powered by high-performance OSRAM LEDs, provide all necessary wavelengths to support plant growth year-round, effectively replacing natural sunlight. These LEDs are mounted on a telescopic arm that can extend up to a foot, adjusting as plants grow.
The self-watering system operates on capillary action and gravity, drawing water from the reservoir into the soil as needed, without requiring external power or pumps. This prevents both under-watering and over-watering, ensuring consistent moisture levels for optimal plant health. The Pico is versatile enough to grow a variety of plants, including microgreens, decorative flowers, or air-purifying plants.
Its portable design is further enhanced by USB Type-C ports on both sides, allowing multiple Pico units to be chained together for an expanded indoor garden. This feature enables power pass-through, simplifying the setup of several planters. Available in colors such as Tangy Orange, Oh-So-Lemon, and Krispy Mint, the Pico combines functionality with an aesthetic appeal. The overarching goal of the Pico is to make gardening accessible and convenient for everyone, transforming the task of plant care into an effortless experience of cultivating fresh produce or ornamental plants.
