Man cave showcases hunting gear and memorabilia

The article details the design and construction of a custom "man cave" for a Texas-based hunting enthusiast, a project by Kathleen Jacobson of The Couture Closet. This project received an honorable mention in the Specialty category at the 2023 Top Shelf Design Awards, announced at the Closets Conference & Expo. The client desired a dedicated space to display his hunting collections and memorabilia, as well as serve as a gathering spot for fellow hunters. The design process began with an inventory of the client's collection, similar to how a closet would be organized. This included determining preferred display methods, items for drawers, and concealed storage for gun cases. The client also requested areas for personal memorabilia, a scotch collection, and integrated elements like a TV, wine cooler, and under-counter refrigerated drawers. Inspiration for the design was drawn from various gun shops across North Texas and extensive online image research. For construction, African mahogany was selected for its luxurious aesthetic. The 28-foot-long wall was divided into seven sections, creating a modular appearance. The lower cabinets were designed at 36 inches high and 24 inches deep, incorporating banks of drawers and two sections with adjustable shelves behind doors. Several drawers were equipped with heavy-duty glides capable of supporting up to 800 pounds, specifically for ammunition and heavy hunting gear. The upper cabinets extended 14 inches deep to an 8-foot, 9-inch ceiling, finished with crown molding. A bespoke 4-inch face frame was incorporated between the larger cabinet sections to enhance the luxurious feel. The central section was intentionally designed wider to accommodate horizontally mounted long rifles, adding visual interest. Notched supports were provided by the cabinet shop for vertically displaying rifles in several other sections. Additionally, two sections were designated for the display of collectible handguns. Denim blue leather panels from Eco Domo were used for the back of the display boxes, adding a distinctive touch. Glass insert doors were added to all boxes, except the central section, to protect contents from dust. Hafele Loox 5 LED lighting and WAC 45-degree channels were installed vertically in all boxes to illuminate the displays. A central island, measuring 80 inches long, 40 inches deep, and 36 inches high, was a key feature. One side of the island included two banks of drawers, totaling eight, which were fitted with custom blue leather tray inserts for organizing writing pens, knives, and other small items. The opposite side of the island was designed with cutouts to house additional shotguns upright in gun racks. Both ends of the island featured custom pop-up racks for temporary gun storage. The entertainment section, located in the middle of the wall unit, featured 2-inch thick adjustable shelves for the TV area. The lower section of the entertainment unit included doors with adjustable shelves, a wine cooler, and under-counter refrigerated drawers. The adjacent wall was also finished with mahogany panels, and rough-cut ceiling beams were installed to evoke the atmosphere of a hunting lodge. The materials used included bespoke African Mahogany woodwork, inset style raised panel doors, Eco Domo leather panels in Denim for accents and drawer inserts, Baltic birch for drawer interiors, Grass under-mount soft-closing full extension glides (with special heavy-duty versions for ammunition drawers), Blum full overlay soft-close hinges, Hafele Loox 5 LED tape lighting, WAC 45-degree channels, Schaub brass hardware pulls, and glass inserts for doors. CAD drawings were utilized for the conceptual design phase, while J & J Construction & Cabinetry performed precise field measurements and laser leveling for fabrication. This comprehensive approach ensured a functional and aesthetically pleasing space tailored to the client's specific needs. #ManCaveDesign #CustomCabinetry #HuntingGearStorage #LuxuryInteriors #AfricanMahogany #ClosetDesign #HomeOrganization #SpecialtyStorage #TopShelfDesignAwards #ManCaveDesign #CustomCabinetry #HuntingGearStorage #LuxuryInteriors #AfricanMahogany #ClosetDesign #HomeOrganization #SpecialtyStorage #TopShelfDesignAwards
