Contrast therapy meets neuroaesthetic design at this Singapore spa and bathhouse

Hideaway, a new spa and bathhouse in Singapore, integrates contrast therapy, head-to-toe massage, and neuroaesthetic interior design into its holistic wellness philosophy. The bathhouse, which opened in late 2024, features infrared saunas by Clearlight and custom-built cold plunge tubs. Infrared saunas are noted for their ability to promote cellular repair and detoxification through deeper heat penetration, while the cold plunges, adjustable to 4°C, 8°C, or 10°C, offer benefits such as inflammation reduction and immune boosting. The combined use of these temperature shifts is believed to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to improved sleep and reduced anxiety. This approach highlights the scientific basis behind the therapeutic effects of temperature extremes. The spa offers a flexible experience with four semi-private pods for individuals or pairs, and a private suite accommodating up to four guests, catering to both solitary wellness seekers and those who prefer a social bathhouse environment. Massages are conducted in eight mood-lit treatment rooms, providing a deeper therapeutic complement to the thermal therapies, while a dedicated tea lounge offers a space for contemplative recovery. The spa's unique location within New Bahru, a vibrant lifestyle hub in River Valley, previously a mid-century high school, adds an intriguing architectural layer. The interior and spatial design, crafted by local studio Parable, aimed to create a 'meditation on humane luxury.' The design consciously blends heritage and contemporary elements, utilizing original glass blocks and handcrafted ceramics to evoke a sense of tradition and modernity. Fabric screens softly diffuse natural light in the reception area, and terracotta textures combined with imperfect moulded surfaces introduce tactile warmth, softening the industrial characteristics of the former school building. This careful selection of materials and lighting contributes to a calming and inviting atmosphere, fostering a sense of well-being. Grant Wee, the founder of Hideaway, emphasizes the dual focus on massage and bathhouse therapies, suggesting that optimal rejuvenation is achieved by combining both. He also notes a personal connection to the design, finding it reminiscent of his old high school classrooms with their distinctive glass blocks. The spa's sonic landscape is notably curated, featuring music by artists like Frank Ocean and Cigarettes After Sex instead of conventional ambient sounds, creating an unexpectedly relaxing auditory experience. This bespoke approach extends to Hideaway's retail collection, which includes products developed with local artisans, such as a signature scent by Postcard, scalp serum by Jing Botanics, and handmade bath products from Savan Baths, showcasing a commitment to local craftsmanship and a holistic sensory experience. Hideaway's design philosophy significantly recognizes the impact of environmental design on mental health, aligning with the growing trend of wellness architecture. Parable's Ken Yuktasevi explains that the neuroaesthetic design philosophy, which considers how color, object, texture, and volume create an oasis for urban well-being, was central to the project. The space uses layered screens, specific materials, mood lighting, and textures to create intentionally framed 'moments' that encourage disconnection and surrender. The conversion of a school into a spa is particularly fitting, transforming a place of traditional learning into one of restorative well-being, offering a curriculum that is both enriching and deeply restorative. #SpaDesign #WellnessArchitecture #NeuroaestheticDesign #ContrastTherapy #Singapore #InteriorDesign #HolisticWellness #ArchitecturalRenovation #SpaDesign #WellnessArchitecture #NeuroaestheticDesign #ContrastTherapy #Singapore #InteriorDesign #HolisticWellness #ArchitecturalRenovation
