IU cross-country runner looks beyond the finish line to a career in interior design
Katherine Receveur, a senior cross-country runner at Indiana University Bloomington, is preparing for her final athletic season while simultaneously pursuing a career in interior design. She is enrolled in the School of Art, Architecture + Design, where she is completing her degree in interior design. Receveur's academic journey at IU began after she transferred from Miami University in Ohio during her freshman year's second semester.
Her athletic career at IU has been marked by significant achievements. As a sophomore, she earned All-America honors with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In fall 2017, she secured a Big Ten individual title and received another All-America award. Receveur expresses that the most rewarding aspect of her experience has been witnessing the team's growth and improvement. She notes a strong desire to conclude her final season on a high note, giving her full effort for the team, and observes the team's development in the Big Ten, becoming older, stronger, and more proficient.
Receveur, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, acknowledges the difficulties of balancing life as a student-athlete but emphasizes how these challenges have equipped her with essential skills for academic success. She highlights the strict time management required, contrasting her situation with other students who might have the flexibility for all-nighters. She recounts instances where extensive design assignments, potentially requiring 20 hours of work, force her to prioritize rest, even if it means pausing work. This disciplined approach has prepared her for the demands of her major.
Initially, Receveur did not intend to study interior design. She started her academic path as a sports marketing and management major but soon realized it was not the right fit for her. The prospect of a desk-bound job did not align with her aspirations. Upon discovering IU's interior design program, she discussed it with her parents, who affirmed that they had always envisioned her in such a field. Her interest in interior design was cultivated early on by observing her mother, a real estate agent, stage homes, which significantly influenced her.
Through the School of Art, Architecture + Design, Receveur has applied her skills to practical projects. She collaborated with other students on the redesign of the seventh floor of Hodge Hall and is currently involved in redesigning the Friends of Art Bookshop on campus. During the summer, she gained professional experience by working for an interior design firm in Louisville and was also commissioned to work on a newly constructed house in her hometown.
Looking ahead, Receveur plans to move to a large city after graduation to utilize her degree. She is particularly interested in working for a large commercial firm specializing in designing hospitals and hotels. Her long-term goal includes establishing her own firm. While running will remain a source of joy even after she concludes her competitive career, she is eager to embark on a professional path that offers similar fulfillment and passion.
