Combine Evolution kitchen by Piero Lissoni for Boffi
The Combine Evolution kitchen, designed by Italian architect Piero Lissoni for Boffi, integrates two distinct islands and a dining table into a singular, cohesive design. This updated version of Lissoni's original Combine monobloc kitchen prioritizes functionality and aesthetic unity within the culinary space. The design features a primary unit dedicated to washing and cooking functions, complemented by a second unit for food preparation. These two monolithic islands are interconnected by a large snack table, crafted from solid wood staves, which serves as a central dining or gathering area. This integration aims to streamline kitchen activities and foster a sense of togetherness.
A key design element is the visual contrast between the robust kitchen islands and the lightweight appearance of the open-faced metal shelving units suspended above. This interplay of mass and airiness contributes to a balanced and sophisticated aesthetic. Functionality is further enhanced through integrated features, including storage compartments equipped with sliding lids. These compartments are strategically positioned behind the washing and preparation zones, offering convenient access and maintaining a clutter-free environment. Another innovative feature is the hidden downdraft hood, which discreetly emerges from the countertop behind the cooking area when needed. This hood also incorporates an integrated metal bar, providing a practical solution for hanging utensils and keeping essential tools within reach.
Material selection plays a significant role in the Combine Evolution kitchen's design and sustainability profile. The surfaces and doors of the kitchen units are constructed from Material Design Innovation (MDI), a newly developed composite material. MDI was a collaborative effort between Boffi and Inalco, engineered to offer high resistance and non-toxic properties. Notably, MDI is composed of 50 percent recycled materials, highlighting a commitment to environmental responsibility in modern kitchen design. Piero Lissoni, who also serves as Boffi's creative director, continues to evolve the brand's kitchen offerings with this latest iteration, aiming to blend advanced functionality with contemporary design principles and sustainable materials.
