A Tile Area Rug Is Just One Idea We’re Stealing From This New Amalfi Coast Hotel
The new hotel Borgo Santandrea on Italy's Amalfi Coast offers a masterclass in integrating tile into interior and exterior design, treating tile much like fabric by creatively mixing patterns and scales within a consistent color palette. Overlooking the fishing village of Conca dei Marini, the hotel's mid-century aesthetic, particularly its blue and white scheme, pays homage to legendary Italian designer Gio Ponti, who was known for his tile-rich hotel designs in the 1960s. The architects meticulously sourced 31 types of local tiles over 15 months to achieve the hotel's distinct look.
One striking application of tile is its use outdoors. Contrary to conventional design, Borgo Santandrea extends decorative tile to its terraces, featuring a sleek navy and white chevron pattern underfoot. This same tile pattern is also incorporated into some of the guest rooms, creating a cohesive design flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Inside, the hotel innovatively uses tile to define different areas within an open-concept layout. In the lobby, for instance, a "rug" made of handmade ceramic tiles demarcates the reception desk area, providing a visual anchor and adding a unique textural element to the floor.
The article highlights how tiling a bedroom, often perceived as cold, can actually enhance the space. Borgo Santandrea demonstrates this by extending the bathroom flooring tiles seamlessly into the rest of the bedroom. This technique not only makes the room appear larger but also contributes to a more unified and sophisticated aesthetic.
A particularly artistic use of tile is found in the hotel's restaurant, where columns are adorned with mosaics depicting scenes of daily coastal life. These hand-painted mosaics serve as a tribute to the local culture and provide a visual contrast to the predominantly geometric patterns used elsewhere in the property. This personal touch acts as a refreshing break, adding depth and narrative to the design. The overall design approach of Borgo Santandrea encourages readers to consider innovative ways to incorporate tiles into their own spaces, from creating unique flooring patterns to extending them to outdoor areas and even using them for artistic wall features. The hotel’s commitment to locally sourced materials and thoughtful design choices provides abundant inspiration for home renovation projects, suggesting that tiles can be as versatile and impactful as any other design element.
