Before and after: a lick of paint makes a huge difference to this hallway makeover
This article details the budget-friendly transformation of a 1940s detached house hallway in a Devonshire village by visual merchandiser Ellie Tildesley and her husband, Adam. The couple purchased the home knowing it required significant renovation due to its dated decor, characterized by swirly patterned carpets and Artex walls. Despite its age, the entrance hall possessed a bright and airy quality that appealed to Ellie.
The initial state of the hallway featured woodchip and pink Artex on the walls, which raised concerns about potential asbestos, and a prominent floral carpet extending up the stairs. The couple’s primary goal was to modernize the space while adhering to a modest budget.
Following the purchase, the house underwent rewiring, and checks for asbestos were conducted. The renovation process began with the removal of all carpets and the skimming of walls to eliminate the Artex, particularly in the hallway. A significant effort was dedicated to restoring the staircase, which involved a week-long process of stripping paint with an edge sander. While extensive period features were scarce, the couple successfully preserved the original doors and parquet flooring. Beyond cosmetic enhancements, minor structural adjustments were made, including the installation of a downstairs bathroom adjacent to the staircase and the conversion of a portion of the upstairs landing into a master en suite.
The completed hallway and staircase exhibit a dramatic change from their previous appearance. The original parquet flooring was uncovered, treated, and softened with a rug. Ellie implemented a monochrome scheme by painting the underside of the stairs, skirting boards, and banister. A glass-fronted cabinet replaced a bulky wooden cupboard, providing a more contemporary feel. On the landing, Ellie maximized the natural light by arranging a grid of cherished family photographs on the wall. Through these efforts—skimming walls, removing old carpets, restoring original features, and applying fresh paint—Ellie and Adam successfully created a serene and inviting entrance hall that warmly welcomes visitors.
