This stunning DIY hallway transformation is full of Victorian charm

Annika and Rach Overton-Hope undertook a significant DIY project to transform the fusty, carpeted hallway of their 1875 Victorian semi-detached home into an elegant entrance brimming with Victorian charm. The couple, who document their home renovation journey on Instagram as @VictorianAdventure, were drawn to the character of Victorian homes, but their property's hallway was dark and lacked the expected period features, notably the absence of original floor tiles, which were covered by a drab carpet due to a 1960s renovation. Despite not actively seeking a project house, they fell in love with the property and committed to restoring its historical integrity. The hallway renovation was a challenging endeavor, spanning over six months and beginning in November 2019. It proved particularly difficult because, unlike a single room that could be sealed off, the hallway's constant use meant dust and mess permeated the entire living space. A pivotal discovery came from their neighbors, who possessed original Victorian tiles and revealed that the previous owners of Annika and Rach's home had claimed their tiles were covered in concrete. This intelligence prompted the couple to investigate, and upon lifting a corner of their carpet, they indeed found some original floor tiles underneath, although they remained cautious about their condition. Upon removing the entire carpet, they confirmed the presence of the beautiful original Victorian tiles, though they were in a state of disrepair. Initially, Rach believed the tiles were beyond salvage. However, after extensive online research, they found a specialized cleaning fluid, Lithofin KF Tile Restorer, designed for Victorian tiles without causing damage. Annika performed a patch test, which yielded remarkable results, revitalizing the tiles. The full restoration process involved Annika spending a weekend on her hands and knees, wearing a ventilator mask, to thoroughly clean the entire length of the hallway. The couple still plans to replace damaged tiles, secure loose ones, perform a final clean, and seal them, acknowledging that Victorian tile restoration is a slow, meticulous process. The couple's dedication to preserving original features extended beyond the floor tiles to the staircase spindles. Rach spent months individually hand-sanding, filling, stabilizing, priming, and painting each spindle. This painstaking effort was in stark contrast to suggestions from others to simply replace them. Annika emphasized their commitment to maintaining the 145-year-old spindles, recognizing their historical significance and the stories they embodied. The entire transformation reflects their deep appreciation for the unique character of period properties and their determination to meticulously restore rather than replace, ensuring their home authentically reflects its Victorian heritage. #VictorianHome #HallwayTransformation #DIYRenovation #PeriodFeatures #TileRestoration #HomeMakeover #InteriorDesign #StaircaseRenovation #VictorianHome #HallwayTransformation #DIYRenovation #PeriodFeatures #TileRestoration #HomeMakeover #InteriorDesign #StaircaseRenovation
