DIY transformation: Woman transforms hallway and stairs for less than £200 - top tips

This article details the impressive DIY journey of Hayley, a 33-year-old from Kingston upon Hull, who successfully renovated her hallway and stairs for under £200. Documenting her transformation on Instagram under the handle @walbirchmansion, Hayley shares her approach to creating a bright, colorful, and homely space on a tight budget. Her design aesthetic leans towards bright colors and bold patterns, which she enjoys mixing and matching to achieve a unique look. The article highlights that renovating areas like hallways and stairs can often be expensive and challenging, making Hayley's cost-effective project particularly noteworthy. The renovation process began with extensive preparation, including stripping old wallpaper from both upstairs and downstairs walls and removing the carpet from the stairs. Hayley meticulously removed numerous staples and nails from the stairs, followed by filling holes and sanding the surfaces to create a smooth base. A significant and time-consuming step involved using a heat gun to remove gloss from bannisters, door frames, skirting boards, and dado rails, which was crucial for achieving her desired finish. Despite the walls not being in optimal condition, Hayley opted to manage the imperfections herself by filling and sanding, avoiding the higher cost of professional re-plastering. Once the preparation was complete, Hayley moved on to painting, choosing a two-tone scheme with a dark grey on the lower half of the walls and a blush color for the upper half. For the flooring downstairs, she utilized affordable 'cut and stick' adhesive tiles, which provided the aesthetic of real tiles at a fraction of the cost. The final touches involved decorative elements such as an upcycled mirror adorned with patterned sticky vinyl, artificial plants, hung prints and pictures, and new lampshades. An additional functional improvement included her husband building a cupboard around an upstairs boiler, effectively hiding it and creating valuable storage space. Hayley emphasizes that her entire home improvement philosophy revolves around budgeting, reusing, and upcycling existing items. She acknowledges that this approach requires significant time and effort but views the end transformations as highly rewarding. She also mentions having applied similar budget-friendly techniques in other areas of her home, such as upcycling kitchen cupboards with paint. Her main advice for others considering DIY projects is to simply 'give it a go,' leveraging the abundant online resources for tips and guidance. She encourages self-learning and attempting projects before resorting to professional help, noting that she hasn't needed to call in professionals yet. Hayley strongly advocates for thorough preparation, suggesting that stripping surfaces back to their original state and addressing imperfections before applying finishing touches is key to achieving a professional-looking result without the professional price tag. #DIYHomeRenovation #BudgetDecor #HallwayTransformation #StaircaseRenovation #HomeDecorTips #InteriorDesign #AffordableHomeImprovement #Upcycling #DIYHomeRenovation #BudgetDecor #HallwayTransformation #StaircaseRenovation #HomeDecorTips #InteriorDesign #AffordableHomeImprovement #Upcycling
