Painting the staircase black has taken this renter's hallway from drab to fabulous
This article details a hallway makeover in a rental home, highlighting the transformation of a previously drab and charmless space into a stylish and welcoming entrance. The homeowner, renting from a Housing Association, embarked on a significant renovation despite the initial blandness of the new build and the restrictions associated with a rental property. The primary goal was to create a 'wow' factor in the large hallway, which also needed to function as a practical space for getting ready and storage.
The initial state of the hallway was a "bland white box" with no flooring. The homeowner had saved money specifically for the flooring and opted for a neutral, warm-wood laminate. The most striking change involved painting the staircase black. This bold decision, made with the help of a boyfriend, utilized Frenchic's Al Fresco Inside/Outside range paint in Blackjack. The homeowner chose to leave the staircase without a runner, allowing the black to be a central design element.
A significant challenge arose when addressing the high wall alongside the stairs. Due to the installation of an infra-red heating system, which functions like electric wallpaper, traditional wall decor methods like a gallery wall with nails were not feasible. This led to the decision to use patterned wallpaper. Initially, the homeowner had preferred a gold sample, but a quick change of plans led to the selection of a pink tropical wallpaper, Wonderland Tropical in Blush Holden by World of Wallpaper. This choice, initially a surprise to the homeowner, was found to complement the black staircase effectively.
Beyond the aesthetic changes, practicality was a key consideration. The homeowner aimed for the large hallway to serve as an extra room, requiring both good-looking and functional storage and furniture. An existing white shoe storage rack, suffering from water damage, was upcycled by sanding and repainting it in a custom-matched dusky blush shade, coordinating with the new decor. A heavy-lined curtain was added to the front door to prevent draughts.
The makeover extended to the ceiling, which was painted the same dusky blush color as the shoe rack to provide warmth and integrate with the overall design. Decorative elements included a wreath on the black front door and an oversized arch mirror at the top of the stairs. The mirror was strategically placed to reflect light and make the landing appear larger. A shelf was utilized above a radiator for decorative purposes, and a bench with hooks was incorporated to provide a seating area for putting on shoes and additional hanging space. The homeowner expresses pride in creating a beautiful and functional statement space within the constraints of a rental property and a budget.
