Geometric panels create textured walls inside monochrome penthouse by Pitsou Kedem
Pitsou Kedem Architects, an Israeli studio, undertook the remodeling of a penthouse apartment in Tel Aviv, which they named 'Layers of White' due to its predominantly white color palette. The client's request was for a minimalist apartment with expansive open spaces for his family, aiming for a monastic and silent environment. To achieve this, the architects integrated white metal panels embossed with a geometric pattern, which serve as a distinctive design element throughout the residence. This textured wall covering was strategically applied to visually connect various areas, including an open-plan living space and a bedroom located at opposite ends of a narrow corridor.
The same geometric material extends to a boxed-in island situated off the corridor, which houses a seating area and a bathroom, ensuring visual continuity. Pitsou Kedem explained that the intention was to unify the inner core walls of the building with a single, unique wall treatment. The chosen geometric pattern, characterized by its clear, sharp lines, was selected to harmonize with the apartment's overall aesthetic. The three-dimensional cladding, crafted from large sheets of white painted aluminum, covers significant portions of the walls. The ceilings, remaining walls, and fixtures also maintain a neutral, white tone, contributing to an environment composed of 'layers of pure, soft white'.
Kedem elaborated on the design philosophy, stating that the apartment's spaces were conceived to foster a meditative atmosphere through monochromatic schemes, predominantly featuring white. He highlighted how the interplay of light, shadow, and textures creates multiple layers of white, which, despite their singular hue, manifest in a rich array of 'almost colourful' and varied deep tones. The living space and bedrooms are equipped with ceiling-to-floor glass sections, offering panoramic views of the city. Kedem described the white flat as a 'white canvas to the colours of the city', emphasizing the contrast and connection between the interior and the urban landscape.
Functionally, a central white island delineates the kitchen from a sitting room, which is furnished with dark grey elements to provide a subtle contrast. Utilities are seamlessly integrated into both the island counter and a white storage wall at the back of the kitchen. Overhead lighting in the living area features sculptural folded metal shades, echoing the geometric motif of the wall coverings. In the hallway and above the staircase, slim strips of lighting are installed to accentuate the dimensions of the space. Kedem noted that these long, thin light strips underscore the linear axis along the corridor, while the ceiling fixtures, designed to resemble origami, complement the triangular, three-dimensional walls.
Beyond the open-plan areas, the apartment includes a television room with pigeon-hole storage, a family bathroom with contrasting dark grey textured walls, and three additional bedrooms. The master bedroom is distinguished by two glass walls fitted with thin white curtains, allowing for flexible control over city views and privacy. An en-suite bathroom adjoins the master bedroom through a sliding white glass door, featuring a large mirror, a black counter, and white sinks. Three outdoor terraces, accessible from the hallway and living area, are floored in the same grey material as the interior, establishing a cohesive flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. On one balcony, the geometric pattern from the interior walls is reinterpreted in a 'green' wall, where a triangular framework supports vertical planting beds, adding an artistic and living element to the design. The project aimed to deliver a serene and visually cohesive living environment through a meticulous application of white tones, geometric patterns, and strategic lighting, all while embracing the urban context of Tel Aviv.
