The Insider: On Deadline, Designers Pull Off Chic, Comfortable Interior for Family's Weekend Home
A Park Slope couple, with two teenagers and a dog, acquired a vacation residence in Springs, Long Island's South Fork, and aimed to have it fully furnished by Memorial Day, despite purchasing it in mid-winter. The design firm Jesse Parris-Lamb, based in Gowanus, successfully completed this task within four months. They crafted an interior that is both serene and beautiful, characterized by a pared-down aesthetic and subtle coloration. The design incorporates a mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings, chosen for their family- and pet-friendly attributes.
Whitney Parris-Lamb, co-founder of the firm, emphasized the clients' desire for comfort and functionality, specifically mentioning the need for durable fabrics that could withstand use after swimming. Parris-Lamb and Amanda Jesse, who established their boutique firm in 2014 after meeting at Pratt Institute while pursuing their master's degrees in interior design, highlighted the tight deadline as a significant factor in their approach. Mid-century design served as a key reference point, with the clients expressing a preference for a bohemian feel without going to extremes. The house, being only a few years old and in 'mint condition,' facilitated the rapid turnaround, as no painting was required.
The property, acquired from the architect who designed it, features a dramatic, postmodern architectural style. The designers opted to respect the existing structure, leaving the 'envelope' as is. Large glass expanses ensure that the rooms, many offering views of the surrounding woods or the swimming pool, feel integrated with their natural environment. The team retained some original features, including a space-age floating fireplace and an intricate light fixture in the main living area. To meet the deadline, they sourced immediately available vintage pieces from platforms like Chairish and 1stdibs, avoiding the lead times associated with custom orders.
Color played a crucial role in the design. Upon entering, the main dining area presents as the most neutral space, focusing on texture and natural materials. As one moves through the house, there's a gradual progression in color and saturation, maintaining a dusty, earthy palette but introducing subtle hints of pink, burgundy, and soft cornflower blue. In the living room, an Anthropologie rattan daybed was customized with a tufted French mattress, and a Montauk Sofa was upholstered in handwoven fabric from Studio Four. Vintage Danish mid-century chairs by Børge Mogensen were selected for their aesthetic appeal from all angles, and a spacious coffee table from Pop and Scott completed the arrangement.
For the dining room, drawing inspiration from the rich browns of the woodwork, the designers prioritized texture. This included a credenza with a raffia front, a thick woven sisal rug, and a jute-wrapped pendant lamp from Nickey Kehoe. Vintage chairs were re-upholstered using two types of outdoor fabric, and a stone-top dining table from Croft House added a dark accent. The den/family room, designed as a gathering space, features fewer windows due to its orientation towards the driveway. To counterbalance this, the designers introduced a striped sectional sofa from Roche Bobois with a Moroccan influence, injecting a vibrant burst of color.
The master bedroom maintains a textured and neutral aesthetic, featuring a handwoven bench from Peg Woodworking. A Lostine lamp rests on a contemporary nightstand, complementing the low platform bed, while a hand-thrown pottery lamp from Mt. Washington Pottery is placed on a vintage mid-century dresser with its original enamel pulls. In the guest room, a contemporary desk with a mid-century feel from Chelsea Textiles stands out with its bold eggplant color. Both the bedside lamp and a unique wall lamp above the desk were sourced from Lostine. Outdoors, a large wicker sectional from Restoration Hardware was fitted with custom cushions made from Peter Dunham outdoor fabric, placed beneath the pool pergola.
