Made to Measure

This article details the transformation of a dated Rossdale home into a modern, family-friendly abode for Jacqueline Juselius and Jordan Slator, both lawyers. Eight years prior, Juselius discovered the house during a jog, drawn to its river view and downtown proximity despite its need for renovation. The original 1994 construction featured outdated elements such as sponge-painted walls, hunter green tiles, and ornate gold and brass accents. Collaborating with designer Sheri Krug of Sheri Krug Designs, the couple embarked on a gradual renovation process to create a warm and contemporary living space suitable for their growing family, which eventually included four children. The renovation focused on several key areas, including the kitchen, children's bedroom, master bedroom, and living room. The kitchen, a central hub for Juselius who is an avid cook and baker, retained its original layout but underwent a complete overhaul of cabinets and appliances. Quarter-sawn teak cabinets in a light caramel finish from Rdl World Class Kitchens were chosen to achieve a contemporary yet warm aesthetic, avoiding a stark, cold modern feel. Glass cabinet doors were incorporated to break up horizontal lines and enhance the perception of light and space within the linear kitchen. One significant modification involved reconfiguring a large master suite walk-in closet into a 120-square-foot children's bedroom. Sheri Krug designed built-in bunk beds, maximizing the use of the room's small, angular shape. Safety features included a plexiglass divider on the top bunk, while hidden shelf areas at the head of each bed provided storage for books and iPods. A built-in desk was designed for seven-year-old Aidan, and durable Roppe rubber floor tiles were installed for easy cleanup. The master bedroom received a dramatic redesign by Krug, involving the removal of walls and an unused fireplace to create space for a reading nook. Backlit LED strip lighting was integrated into mirrors above an L-shaped, quartz-topped vanity cabinet, contributing to an airy ambiance. A strategically placed mirror at a 90-degree angle to an east-facing window created an illusion of an elongated view of the downtown skyline. Krug emphasized the dynamic contrast between white walls and darker cabinetry, and the transition from lighter maple flooring to darker tiles grounded the vanities for aesthetic balance. Practicality influenced the fixture choices in the master bedroom, where his and her sinks were placed opposite each other in the bedroom itself to maintain existing plumbing lines. The contractor customized Slator's sink to be eight inches higher than average to accommodate his height. Heated tile flooring was a luxurious addition that the couple deemed worthwhile. Despite sacrificing approximately 100 square feet for an additional children's room, the couple felt they retained ample space in their master bedroom, which Juselius described as a sanctuary akin to a hotel room. The main floor's living room also saw updates, including re-tiling the two-sided fireplace with porcelain. The contractor, Robert Hoiland, ensured a seamless transition between the living room and the kitchen/dining room by matching the maple flooring in the living room with the newly installed flooring, replacing previous hunter green tiles. This approach maintained a consistent flow in the open-concept space, addressing Krug's design philosophy of avoiding definitive breaks in flooring within an open layout. #HomeRenovation #ModernDesign #InteriorDesign #FamilyHome #KitchenRenovation #BedroomDesign #CustomCabinetry #SpaceOptimization #RossdaleHome #EdmontonInteriors #HomeRenovation #ModernDesign #InteriorDesign #FamilyHome #KitchenRenovation #BedroomDesign #CustomCabinetry #SpaceOptimization #RossdaleHome #EdmontonInteriors
