At Home: with Amanda Swaringen of Carolina Design Associates

This article details a home renovation project led by Amanda Swaringen of Carolina Design Associates, focusing on transforming a traditional-style home into one with a fresh, transitional aesthetic that prioritizes natural light, comfort, and functionality. The 5,000-square-foot residence includes a primary suite, three guest bedrooms with en-suite baths, a home office, a bonus room, and an outdoor area. The client desired a cleaner-lined style, moving away from a traditional look characterized by painted white cabinets, marble countertops, red oak floors, and heavy trim work. Swaringen's design emphasized an open floor plan with large glass windows and 11-foot ceilings, contrasting with the previous 10-foot ceilings. The updated home features wide plank floors, slab cabinetry, and the strategic use of stained cabinets and leathered quartzite countertops to introduce warmth. Minimal trim work, high-gloss finishes, and modern lighting fixtures were incorporated to achieve the desired contemporary feel. A central design principle was maximizing natural light to integrate the outdoors with the interior. Upon entering, the foyer acts as a significant focal point. Swaringen designed a bumped wall to highlight lighting, and the flooring consists of large textured porcelain tiles from Walker Zanger, providing a practical transition from the exterior limestone. These tiles extend into the hallway, powder room, and laundry room. The focal wall in the foyer is adorned with Dekton slabs and features a glamorous statement light fixture from Ochre lighting. A flush, hidden closet door with a touch latch mechanism maintains a clean aesthetic. The living room showcases several innovative design elements, including a monorail staircase with thick, floating treads that match the hardwood flooring. Glass balusters were used in place of traditional ones to create an open and contemporary feel. The bar area features functional, artistic doors that serve as a focal point within the open living and dining space. An asymmetrical wall niche was created for the TV and floating shelves, backed by dark grasscloth and accented with gloss floating cabinetry for storage. A custom-made rug from Couture Knots Rugs adds depth, design, and color, while a pouf cocktail table from R Hughes introduces curved lines to soften the room's overall aesthetic. The powder room was designed as a unique and bold statement space, fulfilling the client's request for a one-of-a-kind bathroom that is both practical and stunning. To prevent direct views of the toilet, a frosted glass door separates the sink area from the water closet. Key features of this room include a polished undermount sink and hanging pendant lights. Subtle metallic elements in the wallpaper contribute to the warmth of the space. The overall design effectively maximizes light throughout the home, using elements like translucent glass railings and custom lighting installations that function as both practical necessities and artistic statements. #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #TransitionalStyle #NaturalLight #ModernLighting #CustomCabinetry #ArchitecturalVision #LuxuryInteriors #NashvilleHomes #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #TransitionalStyle #NaturalLight #ModernLighting #CustomCabinetry #ArchitecturalVision #LuxuryInteriors #NashvilleHomes
