A Portland-based couple, Kat and Henry, transformed a black barn in Mosier, Oregon, into a vibrant and personalized weekend retreat with the help of New York City–based architect Don Cantillo. Despite the barn's outwardly brooding appearance, its yellow front door opens into an inviting and colorful interior, thoughtfully designed to be a comfortable fusion of country house coziness and open, airy spaces. The couple, desiring a tranquil escape from city life, purchased the land after the pandemic and envisioned a place for their 3-year-old son, Ben Peter (BP), and their Airedale terrier, Archie, to enjoy. Cantillo worked with the existing floor plan, incorporating pitched ceilings in the bedrooms and expansive windows to maintain a sense of spaciousness. He then layered in warmth and character through colorful tiles, patterned wallpapers, and vibrant rugs. A notable feature is the "playzanine," a luminous mezzanine that effectively functions as a room. This space cleverly accommodates both father and son, with Henry’s desk at one end of a red gingham rug and BP’s easel and play table at the other, highlighting the home's dual functionality for both adult and child.
