Geremia Design Imbues an Olson Kundig Retreat With Warm Tones and Modern Art

The False Bay Residence and Writer’s Cabin, designed by Seattle-based architects Olson Kundig, is situated on Washington’s San Juan Islands, offering exquisite views of the bay and mountains while minimizing environmental impact. The architectural design features a restrained, minimal palette and composition, taking cues from the surrounding agricultural buildings with a steeply pitched roof, open interior, loft space, and overall height that resonates with the local vernacular. The material palette is limited to wood, concrete, and steel, creating a natural and warm aesthetic that blends with the blues and greens of the lush surroundings. Thoughtful design solutions address daylighting and privacy, with large windows emphasizing the connection to the outdoors. The interiors, efficiently laid out, provide ample space for entertaining, family activities, and the display of the owner's extensive art collection. Geremia Design undertook the furnishing and decoration of these spaces, combining restraint, simplicity, and richness to create an elegant atmosphere. A 15-foot-tall, steel pivot entry door opens into a combined art gallery and living area. Upon entry, an iconic block bench by John Eric Byer in blackened maple is revealed, adorned with a mirror piece by Sabine Marcelis and Brit van Nerven, with large openings showcasing the surrounding views. The double-height, glazed living spaces ensure abundant natural light and unobstructed views of the landscape. The upper floor wraps around the main living space below, providing picturesque views from both levels. The living area features coffee bean tables by Holly Hunt, a silk Tai Ping rust carpet, and a custom Living Divani Sofa. Laurier Blanc acrylic glass Hekla Side Table & Stool, embedded with burnt wood trunk, complements Taylor Forrest Club chairs, positioned beneath an Amir Zaki photograph. A steel fireplace separates the dining space from the open kitchen, with concrete floors extending throughout the main floor. White walls are accented by dark window frames, steel contrasts, and other natural materials. Lighting by Wintercheck Factory sits atop a credenza by Wüd Furniture Design. Custom-designed open-shelving credenzas align with the window mullions, situated beneath a Tom Burrows artwork. The Olson Kundig-designed kitchen boasts green soapstone countertops and oak veneer cabinets, featuring custom Olson Kundig hardware. The soapstone counters and backsplash reflect the natural setting, drawing in hues and colors from the surrounding landscape. Above, a loft area is open to the main living space, with a bedroom on each level separated from the social areas. The loft space is furnished simply, with colorful artwork and rich textiles. Full-height casework includes a built-in desk that can be concealed behind pocket hinge doors. Playful artwork by Ben Chickadel adorns the architectural palette, adding vibrant colors and textures. The bath areas maintain the natural, simple material palette, featuring a large soaking tub atop pebble tile. The master bedroom includes a custom leather-and-steel bed, a collaboration between Geremia and fabricator Tod Von Mertens, and a rolled-steel and Thassos marble fireplace. A vintage Mario Bellini club chair is placed by the hearth. The Writer’s Cabin, a 500-square-foot glass guest cottage, is surrounded by three wooden decks that can be raised via hydraulic winches, wire rope, pivoting sheaves, and lead blocks to serve as shutters or opened to connect with the landscape. This cabin, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and custom shutter-deck enclosure, offers a profound connection to the natural environment. The cozy sitting area serves as an ideal writer's retreat, and a rotatable fireplace provides warmth both inside and outside. #OlsonKundig #GeremiaDesign #FalseBayResidence #WriterSCabin #ModernArchitecture #InteriorDesign #PacificNorthwest #ArtCollection #OlsonKundig #GeremiaDesign #FalseBayResidence #WriterSCabin #ModernArchitecture #InteriorDesign #PacificNorthwest #ArtCollection
